Mysterious Odor.... |
Lead | ||
|
Another one in the series "What is that SMELL?" Mark I, three cabin. There are two odors associated with our heads. The stale intake water which
occurs when the boat sits, especially in these dog days of summer, the water is 86 degrees right outside the boat. We'll call it odor # 1. The other is the
smell of older components. I have replaced as many hoses as possible, but the tanks are old, and permiated. They smell, somewhat, it's not too bad,
especially when we are on the boat with air moving. Specifically the aft holding tank, under the starboard aft bunk, has been cleaned best as possible, and I
have sealed the lid with tape. We'll call this odor # 2. Several times, lately, there has been a new, very bad, odor. It is one of the family of sceptic
odors, but it is is not #1 or #2....it's worse. It occurs in the SB aft cabin, not the head, when under sail, and heeling to SB.... I then ventilate the
heck out of the cabin and it goes away. Today, with the lid off the tank compartment, I plugged the vent on the aft holding tank, and pumped it for a while.
There were no odors eminating from tank or it's assiociated hoses.... After a while I took the plug out of the vent, and there was a notable decompression,
in other words, I believe the system is air tight where it needs to be.... Any suggestions?

Oscar,
I had almost the same problem on my (new?) 42 only it was the forward head. The dealer and I both tried our darndest to figure out where this smell came from. The symptoms were just as you describe. The second season it finally declared itsef so to speak! The white vent hose had literally deteriorated from the holding tank for a distance of about 8 inches. Initially, it did not smell when there was moving air, but by season 2 it overcame even the moving air and by sniffing each and every hose we were able to isolate the problem. When I cut into the line with a razor knife at the deteriorated portion it is was like very soft rubber and easy to cut. The rest of the line was still in good shape and very hard to cut through. This was a hard one to find, especially since the boat was new! Fred Drummond Royal Serf Hull #855 2 Cabin C/L |

Hi Oscar
These holding tank odours have plagued my boat since I bought it 12 years ago. The biggest improvement that I made, above changing hoses, adding chemicals etc, was to fit carbon filters to the vent line. Nothing makes more of an improvement than that. David 492 mk 2 |

Thanks for all your insights......
To reiterate....I have pressurised the system and wiggled all connections on the tank, everything is tight. The odor is major, and instantaneous. Everytime it has happened (three times now) we were heeling pretty good to starboard. I then ventilate and it goes away..... not to return for a while......(weeks). We use an enzyme, and clear the supply line after our absense with an air-freshener spraying in the bowl. When in regular use we have no odors, except as noted above. The mystery odor is unlike any other odor associated with the system....it's pretty nasty, not the odor I normally get when working on our biologically (relatively) healthy tanks...... The only thing I can think of is that we do not have enough water in the bowl, and/or that the tank "burps" through the bowl when heeling.....how the odor gets into the aft cabin, and quickly disappears from the head is not explained with that theory.....

We also had a terrible ordor in our aft head....it was coming from the shower sump....we never use the aft shower but water had gotten in the sump....old sour
stale water. Cleaned it out and no more ordor.

I had the same problem with the aft shower sump. The water gets u\into the sump when the "Admiral" cleans and pumps out the fridge without telling me
so I can open the thruhull as that pump shares the same thruhull as the aft shower sump. You"re right it definitely smells!!

I have the same problem while healing to sb. Water gets in the sump line and will drain into the aft head. If I don't remember to pump it out at the dock,
it makes a fine mess. Once the water drained out of the head and into the cabin. Debbie thought we had a serious leak, but we soon discovered the problem. I
need to put an anti siphon valve on the line or just remember to close it while sailing. And yes, it stinks.

25 mile beat in 20-25 knot winds yesterday.....no odor.....maybe the pressurization test cleared the vent? Also made sure there was enough water in the
bowl...... go figure.
I have removed the hose clamp on the hose from the cooler/aft shower drain hose to pump. regularly drain everything into the bilge, right before wash and mop out. Even without ice condensation builds up in the cooler and drains into the system.

Oscar,
Good to see you motoring into Solomons the other day. I would have chased you down, but I was heading out for practice on a race boat, getting ready for Screwpile. Hope to see you in the harbor again.
