Anyone with a Panda Generator located in the Starboard Aft lazerette have any input on how best to access the Seawater Impeller. Looks like you need to be a
midget to get into the space.

Henry,
I have the Panda 6 kW generator in the starboard aft lazarette. It is tight, but I have changed the oil and changed the impeller. The impeller failed fairly quickly, and the lack of water burned up the exhaust hose. I replaced that as well. (There are supposed to be interlocks, but there were no warnings and no automatic shutdown.) There was a "recall" on this unit, and a couple of service guys actually changed the outer bearing on the generator, without a great deal of difficulty. I did not watch the service guys, but I don't think it is possible for an adult to get in beside the Panda unit. I have done all of my work either from the top, from the aft cabin, or from the port lazarette. For the latter, I disconnect the autopilot and the rudder restraint to give better access. You did not say which Panda unit you have. On the 6 kW unit the impeller is reasonable accessible, just to starboard of the rudder post. If you have a different unit then my comments may not apply. Mine's in the port lazerette, but access is the same problem. It helps to remove the lazerette hatch and enjoy working on your head. I've tried
going through the starboard lazerette, but the rudder and auto pilot ram are in the way. I replaced both raw and fresh water pumps at 230 hours.

Bob,
Any problems with overheating? I only have 35 hours but it shut down based on exhaust temp after about 15 mins. Checked intake strainer and hose to Genset and all okay. Took the cover off the sea water pimp and impeller looks okay but I did not remove. Any thoughts? Henry Gamsby Kira #916 |

No overheating problem. I discovered the leaking pump before it totally failed. My unit is a 2001 and I don't have an impeller cover. I have to remove
the entire unit. I am presuming there is no water coming out the exhaust. Basic (sorry) question but is the thru hull open? Is the thru hull blocked?
