Anyone using a second forestay to create a cutter rig?
If so has it improved performance reaching or do you just use it for ease of handling ay a storm jib? thnaks foa any info. |

Chris: I don't have a staysail but wish I did. Salacia has one and has sailed in Mexico and the Pacific with it. the boat Cledich (I think that's how its spelled; it's pronounced Kay Lee) has one and has also done a lot of long distance travel. Also Bingo Tambien. All said that they appreciated the ability to reduce sail and lower the center in strong winds.

I currently own celdish. I was considering removing the staysail rig on this boat.. I was cthinking of a gale sail for heavy wind. Do you still regret not making the install? What has been the biggest reason.? thanks Chris |

Boy, you are digging this post out of the archives! I have since sold White Star but spent over two seasons in Mexico on her, both on the Gold Coast and in the Sea of Cortez after sailing her down from San Diego. I always felt the boat was working more than it needed to going to windward in 25+ winds, and even when cracked off a little. I didn't feel it was unsafe, exactly, but just not pointing well, had too much heel, etc. I could balalnce the helm nicely by triming but always thought that a smaller headsail, closer in, and a reefed main would settle the boat down even in much stronger winds. Folks that I spoke with who had cutter rigs liked them and felt that for cruising the problem of tacking the jib though the slot was not serious. Some folks had a "removable" headstay which they kept tied off by the chainplates and put forward when they needed it. Anyway, I never installed one so it's all just theory. I know if I buy another boat for cruising, even "coastal" cruising, it will have a cutter rig. Finally, some riggers I have spoken with expressed concern that so called "gale sails" which wrap around the headfoil, were bad for the headfoil and could cause problems. Just a thought. No doubt others on the forum will have more experience with both gale sails and cutters. Good Luck with your decision.... James |

A question for those who have installed inner forestays. Where on the deck did you attach the bottom of the forestay? and what reinforcements did you do to
prevent the deck from being lifted? What about running back stays? and if you used them did they go back to a fixed attachment point on the deck with a block
and tackle arrangement, or did they go through a turning block to a winch and cleat?
I am leery of the "gale sail" type of device, because it seems that once its up, trying to get it down in a blow would be hazardous to say the least. I've acquired a low cut 110% genoa that I can roll up to handle most sailing winds, but a true gale would be a different story. I know others have put up inner forestays and used hank on sails for storm conditions, but I should think that some serious reinforcing is required to handle extra heavy conditions? I'm almost set to cast off, so it won't happen this season, but I'd consider it for next season in the the Windwards. Addison

Quick question, Has anyone thougt of using a sail rigged much like a code zero with a high strength cord running through it and then a standard jib halyard as
a substitution for a permenent inner stay? Seems like this would work just as well as a having a inner stay constructed but would allow for easy removal and
quick deployment when needed. All you would need to do is reinforce the deck area were the sail would attack and then hoist the sail with enought tension to
make it work. Just a thought.

I did not make the upgrade on my boat but the inner stay is just plated just behind the anchor locker and then an addition wire and turnbuckle is inside forward of my shower door and runs down to the V in the hull. a 3/4 inch marine plywood bulkhead was glassed in and the rigging terminates there. The running stays are attached to through bolted padeyes just aft of the original stays. I can send you a few photos if you are interested in making the upgrade. Chris |
