Companionway fabric door insert

I had one on my C36 but did not keep a record of who made it; I would like to acquire one for my C-42. It is a light weight option to custom doors and hatch boards. It fits by sliding in place from the top. When you are underway and want to keep the bugs out or when sleeping at night and you want to keep air conditioning/heat in but you do not want to button up with the hatchboards, this door insert is very helpful. Posts: 74 02/13/08 16:08:59	Peter, We used a slightly different approach, which, IMHO, is lighter & stores more easily than doors. We had our canvass man cut two trapezoidal pieces - one of plastic (or whatever you use for your dodger windows,) and one of screen material. These trapezoidal pieces exactly matched the main hatch opening with overlap so that the sides and top of the opening trim are covered. He then trimmed each piece with sunbrella fabric which matches our dodger. Snaps were installed in the sunbrella fabric, so when we want to use either the solid plastic or the screen, we just unroll it and snap it on the outside of the main hatch. We don't generally snap the sides or the bottom, since the weight of the canvass, and a pipe sewn into the bottom of the trapezoid is enough to keep the flap down. The only negative is that you must get used to entering and leaving the main cabin with the main hatch slid closed. Takes some bending. Larger crew and guests must unsnap the two corners to slide the main hatch open. Maybe you can visit us in Waukegan. We're not far apart. Posts: 160 02/14/08 12:36:02	On Threepenny Opera we have simply duplicated the current wooden hatch boards in styrofoam. It's cheap fast and at the end of the season they serve as useful pads to keep the boom off the deck. If ventilation is needed, cut a hole(s) through the board and tape a piece of screen over the inside. Posts: 8 02/17/08 14:17:03	Pete Previous to my brand new '07 42 Mark II I owned a Hunter 36. I had a custom companionway cover made by my sailmaker of matching Sunbrella that snapped in place on the companionway opening and could roll up from the outside or inside and also had a center section made up of screen that could also roll up. I used this in place of the wooden wash boards when I was aboard the boat. It was a beautiful lightweight waterproof cover. It kept in the air conditioning, provided ventilation and was simple to stow on top of the sliding hatch or could be unsnapped folded up in a minute.
