I think this topic has come up before but can't find it in search. Has anyone installed a thruster on their 42? If so, please share the details.

Rick,
Welcome back from Cabo and glad you made it safely. There have been plenty of conversations on thrusters. Here's some from the old forum. http://www.catalina42discussionforum.yuku.com/forums/78?page=2

Rick:
There is a mention in Yachting World of a biz that makes a thruster unit that does not require a huge hole in the bow. They use a different type of pump and push water through a standard thru hull fitting, perhaps like a jet ski propulsion type of thing. Much less install costs and less interruption of water flow as the holes are so much smaller. Yet they say it still works, and without the cavitation and noise of the standard propeller type. I don't have the article with me but will try to find it in a day or so. Perhaps some googling would reveal it... James |

I think the thruster James is referring to is made in the Netherlands... Link here: http://www.willdo.eu/

Yes, that is the one I saw in Yaching World. I don't know anything specific about it but it seemed worth a look. Thanks Rodney for the quick info... James |

James/Rodney, I've seen the Willdo website and it is interesting but pricey, especially since it's in Euros. The 12V version is also a bit underpowered
for a 42.
I can't find any posting on either forum from someone who has actually installed a thruster. Based on some quick measurements, I think a Sidepower 55 will fit under the shower seat in the pullman bow w/o interior mods. I know many think this is an excessive luxury but if it can be done for around $5K it's worth pursuing. Rick 704-3 |

We have a wesmar installed in out boat. the unit is below the forward centerline berth in front of the holding tank. The unit makes maneuvering in tight places
a piece of cake. especially when there are crosswinds. Our slip requires backing in and this unit makes it as easy as backing up a car.
