winterizing engine

Posts: 51 11/26/07 14:26:56	Tags : None ok, everything thing I have read and all the discussions on the forum have stated when winterizing the engine close the seacock, open the strainer and pour antifreeze into strainer. I tried this and the antifreeze just sat in the strainer and would not pump through engine. My impeller is pulling raw water with no problem when the top for the strainer is on. What am I doing wrong? Any suggestions from my club members would be awesome. Thanks Phil second wind #95

Posts: 138 11/26/07 18:31:05	Phil, With the top off the strainer the engine is sucking air from the strainer. If you remove the hose from the strainer and connect a hose from the strainer to a bucket of antifreeze it will work. Leave the top on the strainer. Gerry C42 #108

Posts: 335 11/27/07 16:46:14	Phil, Make sure you are removing the filter screen, not just the lid. Then make sure the level in the bowl is above the suction outlet from the bowl. Posts: 221 11/27/07 19:53:55	I modified the intake system to make winterizing easy. I posted (maybe...) a picture of the setup. Note mentioned in the picture is that I normally drain the strainer and prefill it with antifreeze as a first step. Try this link. Posts: 51 11/28/07 07:50:18	hi larry tried again yesterday it took awhile but I managed to suck a gallon of antifreeze into the engine very slow process though. give me a call when you take your main off I have to take it to scott allen sails in annapolis they will sew the pockets on for the dutchman system from my old sail.
