Hi-
I have a catalina 42 mkII "REUNION" 1996 hull 533
do I have the new rudder or old .... After Moonspun I am wondering what I have.
I recently noticed that my prime anchor is 33 lbs burce not 33Kg...gasp..I would like to go bigger say a 66 bruce or Simpson Lawerence copy (cheaper)
What do you folks like for mexican crusing and channel islands anchorages...Help me
I am running stock catalina sails with 1st and 2nd sngl. line reefs; and plan to cruise to mexico in October. What sail mods. or sails do you think I will need
from your experience?
I have equiped the boat for long range with 150 gal of fuel, ssb, radar, autopilot ,weather fax/modem ,( 2)GPS/chartplotter, ,auto prop, water maker, AGM batteries, etc
Looking for 42 folks advice and experience as I have only had the boat 1 year.

Dan, I cruised to Puerto Vallarta last November with a 44lb Bruce knockoff, 150' chain and 300'line. Made bridal from 5/16" chain hook and line to tie off at both cleats. For stern anchor had FX-16 and used it only off Cabo. No problems in 30-40 kts and bumpy seas. Also had standard Catalina sails with 1st and 2nd reef up to 30 kts true. There were a few times when 3rd reef would have been more comfortable. I went with 60 gals fuel and 4, 5 gal jerry cans. Chart plotter was invaluable but be aware that some areas like Banderas Bay are off by about 1 nm. Another lesson learned was when at sea for long time, save some fresh water to rinse off the furler and other aluminum fittings. Also highly recommend SSB Email to keep in touch and 3-step alternator. Don't forget spares, zincs, lightning protection and OB oil. A sediment filter for shore water is a good idea. I didn't use a Baja filter but some of the fuel was really dirty. Have fun!

I understand starting at hull 502, all c42's got the longer elliptical rudder. The big question you should be asking, at least I would like to know, Were the entire rudder supports beefed up to handle the larger rudder? I have not seen an answer to this question.
I got the Delta 44 anchor and am very pleased with it. I would trust it in Mexico. I have successfully anchored at Forneys (Santa Cruz Island) in 25 knots of wind in good sized waves with absolutely no thought of problems.
Going to Mexico in October, sounds like a Baja Ha-Ha trip to me. I did it in 98 (in another boat), had a fantastic time. Captain Rick just brought his 42 back from PV. You guys will have plenty to talk about. Where do you keep Renuion? I'm in Marina del Rey (hull 600, Aphrodisiac).

Dan-Your rudder design probably depends on your keel. I think the new boats with fin keels use the deeper eliptical rudder. Saw a brand new shoal (beavertail) keel boat last fall and it's rudder was identical to my 1990 version. Looks like they kept the original rudder for the shoal draft version.
