life line turnbuckles turning green |

My lifeline turnbuckles are truning green and there is a green scum on the threads. This is a new boat and it seems that this is not right. Is this a cosmetic
only problem or a corision problem? Appreciate your thoughts.

Sandy,
As long as it's a new boat, I would see the dealer about the green. It can typically be cleaned up easily enough with a wire brush. Btw, I have removed the white covers from my life lines for that very reason. I like to see what I'm dealing with and the covers on my 12 yr old boat will hide that corrosion.

I also have a new C42 and I have the same problem. It is relatively easy to correct BUT I have found numerous issues like this. Catalina's quality has
been disappointing.

Don, What other quality problems have you experienced with your new C42?

Not only did my turnbuckles turn green but I have rust everywhere. For example, half the screws used on the hinges for the anchor locker are rusting. The
stanchions have rust on them. The lifelines are rusting as well as the transom ladder. Also, all of the split rings are severly undersized and prone to rust.
(You should replace them soon before one breaks.).
Furthermore, the check valve was missing from the aft sump pump. The forward sump pump was mounted backwards (causing the shower stall to overflow). The transom shower head would not turn off. The refrigerator barely cooled. It took Catalina nearly a year before they agreed to replace the compressor. The mast continues to leak. My pullman mattress has been ruined by rain water and neither my dealer or Catalina cares. (They blame Charlston Spars). I could go on and on.

Don,
Mast leak: Check if the furling cavity drain is outside the mast booth. Mine was installed under and leaked heavily. Traveller bolts: 2 are stamped 304 and rust big time. My dealer replaced them with 316. Transom shower: The cheap plastic shower head cannot take the pump pressure. I ended up capping the lines to it. I ended up talking to Mr. Butler himself... Its high time that Catalina make some serious management changes. These quality problems cannot continue if they want to keep selling boats.

I don't understand the comment about the transom shower head and the pump pressure. On our boat, which is not much older than yours, there are valves in
addition to the shower head. The valves are branded "Whale", which is a recognized name in boat plumbing.
Did they eliminate the valves? Regards, Gene Fuller Yorkshire Rose, C42 #870 |

Gene,
The pressure flexes the valve plastic housing and the shower leaks. They are made by Whale. If you force the valves in the closed direction, the leak stops. I took them apart thinking that the seals were damaged and all looked ok. Pierre Shumka #899

Hi Sandy,
If your turnbuckles and threads are turning green, is it possible that they are bronze? My old 1989 C42 has stainless steel hardware on the lifelines, and no green. As for rusting stainless steel screws, try holding a magnet up to them. There should be no magnetic attraction if they are good stainless steel. I have found some "stainless steel" parts to have varying degrees of magnetic attraction. I'm not a metallurgist, but I would suspect that these parts would be more susecable to rusting. Bob,
Almost any stainless steel can get a little bit of surface discoloration when new. After cleaning and polishing a couple of times the rusting slows down a lot. The reason for the initial rust is that the fabrication and handling of SS parts often leaves the surface not fully passivated. The forming dies are invariably some sort of alloy steel, welding disrupts the surface, and just plain handling introduces contaminants to the surface. This is true even for the non-magnetic stainless steels. Regards, Gene Fuller Yorkshire Rose, C42 #870 |

I'm keeping a list of quality problems. Not many yet. My auto pilot and chart plotter went down last week at sea. A C 470 owner helped get it going (a
wire was not security attached and came loose). Hope that is all it was. Also found another wire not labeled in panel that was just hanging there. I did not
get an updated wire diragram althought I was promised one. I also seem to be burning some oil, 3/4 quart in less than 50 hours seems excessive.Back of
transom is sootly. Have not gone back to dealer yet as I'm in Mexico with boat. Also have noticed excessive rust on some screws around stancions and that
some of the fittings on the boat like the life line pelican hook have broken due to weak cotter pins (don'g know correct name of circle things off top of
my head)

Hi Sandy
My boat did not stop smoking (soot) until it had aproximately 70 hrs on the engine. I was concerned that there was something wrong with the engine it smoked so bad. So the transom soot may be because the engine is new. I now have 350+hrs on the engine and the transom stays clean. I have always run the engine at 2650 rpm which equates one gallon of diesel in an hr. There are no other complaints other than that awful shower arrangement (2 cabin centerline) Peter C'est la Vie Hull #746 |

Sandy:
Ref: Pelican Hooks...If you are talking about the rings you use to pull the pins, I have another post where I should exactly what to buy from McMaster to solve the problem. Just type "mcmaster" in the search window and look for my post on split rings for pelican hooks. Ref: Sooty Transom...This is likely from diesel and not engine oil. The 4JH4 is a lower RPM engine. How hard are you running her? Have you had the tach checked? My experimentation with the stock 3 blade is that if your transom is awash under power, you are probably using more throttle than you should.
