installing an oil pressure gauge. |
Lead | ||
|
I have a 1989 C42 with a 4JHE 44 hp Yanmar. I recently installed a link system which now makes my voltmeter on the engine panel a bit less important. I would like to replace it with an oil pressure gauge. I believe I already have the sending unit installed (see link). Anyone know who makes this unit? Is it compatible with any gauge? Special considerations?
Thanks in advance for any information provided. www.catalina42.org/photos/oil-pressure-sender.jpg Scott MissAdventure C42 #123 |

Before adding an oil pressure gauge - my first call would be Yanmar- I have found them to be extremely helpful in the past. They will very likely have the exact fit gauge for your engine/panel.

Scott,
The picture shows an oil pressure switch. This provides a ground when the oil pressure drops and activates a buzzer. For oil pressure you can install a manifold from the same port and install your pressure sw. and a pressure transducer. Perhaps there is a second oil port on this engine. Ask Yanmar. #899 2 cabin Pullman

I'm pretty sure there actually is a oil pressure guage sender on the engine (in addition to the idiot switch), just not connected to anything. I know older engines had the guage and I don't think it was from a T fitting from the existing switch.

I was assuming that this is the sending unit which could be connected to a gauge. When I was checking the function of the alarm lights and buzzer, the oil pressure alarm circuit is triggered by another pressure switch located behind the oil filter. Grounding this wire to the case triggered no alarm.

the picture you sent is the sender for an oil gauge. Any stock 80 psi switch should do the trick, it does for me.

Peter: I am assuming that you mean't any stock 80 psi gauge.
Is is just as simple as switching out the gauge and attaching the sending unit output and a ground? Thanks Scott |

Scott,
I am in the process of adding an oil pressure gauge to my MkII. I discovered that while the OP sender is there and has a wire connected to it from the engine's wiring harness, the wire doesn't go to the pedestal. On my boat, I found the wire in the engine wiring harness was cut back and taped near the engine wiring terminal strip. On my boat the engine wiring terminal strip is mounted on the starboard side of the engine compartment up high above the air cleaner on the engine. The wire from the OP sender is yel/blk. Unfortunately, the red wire from the engine harness also powers the circuitry in the pedestal in addition to the voltmeter so using that wire as the OP sender wire wouldn't work. IMHO, I've determined that I need a separate wire for the OP sender/gauge combo. You could use the voltmeter hole for the oil pressure gauge though. My effort to add an oil pressure gauge is stalled waiting for me to find time to run the additional wire. Hope that helps, Rodney Kidd, C-42 #567 Sashay, 2 Cabin Fin, Marina Village, Alameda, CA

Rodney,
Did you match up a compatible guage & actually temporarily try it? Is it an 80 psi guage that was previously mentioned? Is it the larger sender that had a photo in the original message? Am I correct in assuming you just provide a positive 12 volts to the + terminal of the guage & the negative goes to the connector on the sender? I've been wanting to put one of these in also & it looks like that date is getting closer thanks to your help & others on this forum. ~~~~_/)~~~~

Re: done that | #9 | ||

Norm,
No I haven't actually wired it up even temporarily. I am still trying to determine the ohmic value of the sender on the engine. There are 2 standard marine sender values: 33-240 ohms (USA standard) and 10 - 180 ohms (Euro standard). The sender on the engine measures about 100 ohms with the engine off & about 50 ohms running at idle. My guess is that the sender is either Yanmar proprietary or the Euro sender. The gauges in the engine panel are made by Teleflex-Morse. The matching gauges are Teleflex oil pressure gauge p/n 84180 (for 33-240 ohm senders) or p/n 61766 for 10-180 ohm senders. I am going to buy a 61766 and give it a try. The gauge has 3 connections, ground, +12VDC, and sender. There are also connections for lighting. If anyone knows what the oil pressure sender value is on the 4jh2 engine please post a reply. Rodney Kidd, C-42 #567 Sashay, 2 Cabin Fin, Marina Village, Alameda, CA

Rodney: Does your sending unit look the same as mine? I am going down next week and will try to figure out what and who makes it.
