Cathy, our last boat was a Catalina 38, and it was painted black. Looked great but it was just like a black car. It would streak. Had it for 18 years and re-painted it 3 times. I have a close friend with a C42, same as ours - 2001. He had it Awlgriped in flag blue. It came out very well. It's amazing how dark blue isn't as hot as black. It was a very good job. You can see it on our website in the photo gallery under "Fine Lion and her Friends". The boat is "Blew Streak". It's for sale by the way.

You don't want dark gel coat. It will fade, and is difficult to keep at a high polish. Awlgrip is the best. I've even had Imron on boats before. Make sure you have a contractor that is good. Check out their work. You will also have to make sure they have a weather window if they do it outside. It's best to do inside. I like having two coats of clearcote put on after the color. It protects and keeps the high gloss.

I chose not to paint the C42. Maybe later, but I like the "lower" maintenance at this time. The dark hulls do look great, however.
