We actually requested a quote from Catalina to have ours gel-coated in Navy (actually, just reversing the existing white and blue on the hull). They quoted a small fortune, considering it used existing inventory. They obviously didn't want to do it.
There is an older C30 in my marina in medium-dark blue that looks fantastic. It was painted at least five years ago. I don't recall the specific paint used...it's been a few years since that conversation. I think the darker colors are very practical in the northern lattitudes, but may well have fading issues down south. Several boats, such as Sabres and Grand Solei's come from the factory in navy gelcoat. From a practical standpoint, we elected not to paint the hull because it would be more difficult for our charter agency to repair scuffs in the hull. That's an issue to consider, too. Flag Blue 42 | #2 | ||

Cathy,
Saw a listing some time ago for a 42 that had been painted Flag Blue (Navy). Photos looked great. Only think I'd worry about is that dark boats can get pretty hot. I'd be reluctant to do it on the Chesapeake or any further south. You might get away with it in New England. Larry |

Painted Hulls | #3 | ||

Cathy, our last boat was a Catalina 38, and it was painted black. Looked great but it was just like a black car. It would streak. Had it for 18 years and re-painted it 3 times. I have a close friend with a C42, same as ours - 2001. He had it Awlgriped in flag blue. It came out very well. It's amazing how dark blue isn't as hot as black. It was a very good job. You can see it on our website in the photo gallery under "Fine Lion and her Friends". The boat is "Blew Streak". It's for sale by the way.
You don't want dark gel coat. It will fade, and is difficult to keep at a high polish. Awlgrip is the best. I've even had Imron on boats before. Make sure you have a contractor that is good. Check out their work. You will also have to make sure they have a weather window if they do it outside. It's best to do inside. I like having two coats of clearcote put on after the color. It protects and keeps the high gloss. I chose not to paint the C42. Maybe later, but I like the "lower" maintenance at this time. The dark hulls do look great, however.
