Posts: 5 12/06/05 02:53:38	Tags : None Hi I am thinking of purchasing a (2000-2001 model) Catalina 42 on West Coast of USA and shipping to Australia. Probably won't save money but very few good used 42's available here and most are ex charter boats. Does anyone know of shipping costs and/or shipping companies. I only know of Dockwise and they cost $25-$30k USD float on float off West Coast to Oz. I assume this would be the most expensive way. Does anyone know of a more economical way or who Catalina use to ship new boats OS. Also it seems www.yachtworld.com is largest site for looking for used boats. Any other suggestions? Any advice would be greatly appreciated Regards David

Posts: 94 12/06/05 13:10:34	I used Dockwise to come north from La Paz to Vancouver BC. I don't think they have a pick up or drop off on the West Coast of the US. In May of 2005 it cost $10,000 full price, if you booked (non refundable) 3 months in advance you saved 10% or paid $9,000, if you booked 5 months you saved 20% or paid $8,000. I suspect the same discount deal for shipping to OZ but you will have to load in Ensenada or Vancouver. The closer you load the cheaper it will be. (It was $8,000 full price from Ensenada to Vancouver) Since captains charge about $2.00 a mile for delivery you can do the math to get to Oz. There will be damage and use to factor in, after all it is a boat. Dockwise can do maintenance in route, like put a coat of bottom paint on and other yacht repairs. They are a very well run operation and a good value as nothing was affected on my boat for it's trip north. I would do that shipping again if I had to do it over. 12 days after loading it in La Paz I was motoring about Vancouver BC with no issues! Posts: 20 12/06/05 23:43:11	Our new C42 just arrived in Fremantle from California. We purchased new from Catalina but they used Wallenius Wilhelmsen Shipping and the boat was shipped in a ro-ro ship. Have no idea about the cost as it was all part of the package, but Wilhelmsen has a good web site with information, routes and schedules. www.2wglobal.com wil get you there. We researched purchasing 2nd hand from the US also and I've met a guy here who shipped a boat out from the US. There are taxes and more taxes, customs fees, quarantine and fumigation fees, gas systems to change ect ect. Do your homework carefully. This guy even had gear stolen out of the yacht between putting it on the ship in the US and it arriving here. Not that it is all bad, this guy said he'd do it all again. I think he got a great deal over there. Good luck!! We are so pleased with the arrival of our beautiful new C42...can't wait to go for first sail!!! Chris

Posts: 5 12/07/05 02:54:09	Thanks for the information. Using Dockwise seems just viable, shipping from West Coast, if there is such a thing as a good deal. It seems all up import cost is about $25-$30k USD plus 10% GST (no duty for USA import) on total cost plus conversions, for Ensenada to Brisbane if purchased in USA (significantly more from east coast). The advantage could be cruising Mexico/west coast followed by cruising Whitsundays then cruse to Sydney the next year. Roll on roll off would be cheaper, but lots of additional costs, removing keel?, mast, cradle/trailer plus port costs trucking costs rigging etc, shrink wrapping might improve security. I will do some more investigations. Thanks for the responses. PS I am only in the planning/dreaming stage at the moment as I have been disappointed with the Catalina 400 and 42s I have seen in Sydney so far (mostly ex charter). I like the Catalina 42s but my wife likes the large aft cabin of the C400 (yes not much head room but the Pullman berth does look a little narrow with the mast). I think the 42 just has a better feel and I like the older hull shape, but I am sure 400 vs 42 would be a long and repeated discussion. Regards David

Posts: 20 12/07/05 22:50:57	Hi, This is getting off the shipping topic but I just wanted to add a couple more thoughts. We also looked at the 40 and I didn't like the lack of headroom in the aft cabin. Also, the 42 has a larger engine (56 hp is standard). The third little thing about the 40 was having to step up to enter through the main hatch, it seems so awkward to step up and duck under the dodger all at once. I know these aren't biggies, but they swayed us a bit. The 42 comes in a centreline forward cabin also. I'm starting to sound like a salesman...no, but I really like the boats. Cheers, Chris

I agree with your comments RE C400 and I feel the 42 has some advantages for long distance cruising or long stays on board. So I think you made the right choice. A friend of mine has just bought a 1999 C400 MkII and is very happy. I hope to purchase a local or OS C42 in about 12 months time. I have only seen pictures of the centreline C42. I dont think there would be too many hear in OZ. I would personal find it hard to pick between all of the models as they all have good points. I would be interest to know which model you picked and also I had heard a gas conversion may be required for US boats. Is propane different from LPG in OZ or is it different installation standards? Also thanks for the Wilhelmsen site. It seems they sail from East Coast to OZ. I thought the C42 were built in LA? Regards David

Posts: 18 12/08/05 13:46:02	You might look at commercial shipping companies. Some of the transport ships will carry large boat along with their usual loads on deck. I saw one come into Oakland with a 50 foot sport fisher strapped down on the deck with other items.

Worth checking into, but keep in mind that the boat may be larger than their normal containers, so you may have to pay for 2 or 4 container spaces. Also, check into shipping into different ports because that can influence the price, but then you might have to truck. We have the C42 2 cabin pullman. The shower and head arrangement forward is quite nice but i'm not sure what made us choose the pullman over the centreline except that we'd seen the pullman in the 2nd hand 3 cabin boats which we test sailed. One owner had created a clever storage area by raising the bunk about 15 inches. I may have a photo...they went around the world with the boat. Not sure the difference between propane and LPG but I do know that the US and Australian safety requirements are very different. The new boat came and a local gas fitter has had to completely remove all the American plumbing (which he commented was really well done) and re-install the pipes according to the Aust. standard. Seems a little crazy but that is what has to be done. The regulators are different also. I'm going on holiday as of end of today!!! Posts: 261 12/08/05 18:15:03	Hi David, In the USA the terms "propane" and "LPG" are essentially the same thing. LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) has various components, but a large part is propane. The other common fuel gas is CNG or compressed natural gas. This is almost pure methane. There are two big differences. First, propane liquefies at ordinary room temperature under a pressure of 100 to 150 PSI (7 to 10 bar). CNG does not liquefy at room temperature up to pressures of at least 2500 to 3000 psi (up to 200 bar). Natural gas can be liquefied at very low temperature, and this is sometimes used for storage and shipment. The other difference is at the (low pressure) appliance. The orifice size required for propane and for natural gas is different. Therefore, in addition to any regulatory considerations, there is a substantial change required if one converts between LPG and CNG. Finally, we owned a C400 for 6 years before buying the C42. It is a great boat, and in some ways it is better than the C42 (in my opinion). They are very similar in size, weight, and sail area. The C400 Mark II is equipped with the same 56 hp Yanmar engine used in the C42 in recent years. It really comes down to a matter of personal preference. Regards, Gene Fuller Yorkshire Rose, C42 #870
