Electric Drill for winch |
Lead | ||
|
There was a lot of conversation on the Milwaukee drill and cranker bit as a winch grinder last year. I had some arm shoulder surgery this year and was thinkg of the drill as a solution.
What is your experience with it? Thaks |

I bought the Drill and winch bit on Ebay about 3 months ago and find it very useful for raising the main and raising the dingy onto the fore deck.

I'll second Ron's opinion, it is very handy. You can keep the battery fresh by charging with inverter and charger while underway. I added a second right angle drive for more power. Of course it can also be used as a drill when not on a winch.

Chris, the drill I used was a Milwaukee 18volt drill, 3109-24.
I added a second right angle attachment, 48-06-2871, so it had a bit more power. On eBay is a item called a winch bit, that is chucked in the drill and fits into a winch. I found it can easily raise the main the first 98%, but the last few inches it stalls and you need to use a winch handle(assuming you care about the last few inches). It works very well on the jib winches, no problem bringing in the sheets under 25kts of wind we see in SF bay often. Steve 642-2f TESA

Jolini,
Here is a link to a website that shows the bit and drill. I don't have one but I have been on boat that does and it works well. The drill costs about $300 in the US. www.winchbit.com/ Gery Ragtime C42 108 |

Milwaukee has a new rightangle 1/2 inch drill with a 28 volt battery. I don't know if it has more torque than the 18 volt version but it would be worth checking out before you order the 18 volt.

The 18 volt Milwaukee drill delivers 600in-lbs of torque. The new 0721-21 V28 right-angle drill delivers 1,081 in.-lbs. of torque. That's considerably more power. The drill is probably a little heavier and considerably more expensive. It is a new product and I haven't seen any price for it. I bought the 18v version for $279 including tax and shipping.

About the drill, I looked on ebay for a new one and made sure that the company I ordered from was giving me their ebay price. We have it and use it more for when we are on our "two week cruise" -- getting out of the harbors early and needing to crank it up fast. We keep it under the nav station in a bag so its low and might not dent the sole.
I think I got it -- with the shipping for under $300 But the same day my hubby came home with the same thing... Surprise !!! ( he was forced to take his back to the local store where he paid some $75 more ) cAthy |
