Any advice on placing a winch on the mast for halyard work? I am interested because I race quite a bit and a winch at the mast would really help with raising and lowering the chute. Also I think it would help with tensioning any halyards. Any and all advice on installation and winch sizing would be wonderful. The spar is a Charleston.

Tom,
I installed a Lewmar 40 on the starboard side of my mast in 1994. In addition, I also installed a sheet stopper above the mast so that the main halyard could be "locked in place" after the main was raised. Then it is possible to use the winch for other purposes. Most of the time, I use the winch just to raise the main. There are also two cleats below the winch so that the main and a spinnaker halyard can be independently cleated off. Tom,
I recently added winches to both sides of the mast- 2 speed Lewmar 30's. They have more power then leading the halyards aft to the 40's. I haven't used the cabintop winches for a halyard since. I can jump the main up by hand at the mast and just have to winch the last 2 feet or so (I was lucky to raise it half way by hand from the cockpit). The winches are located 8-10" below the boom gooseneck. For the wedges, I routed 3/4" cellular PVC round to match the size of the winch base, and hand worked the mast radius (with a benchtop belt sander). They are mounted with 1/4-20's tapped into the mast. Cleats were mounted down lower to tie off. We have 3 halyard to Port (Genoa, Spin, Staysail) and just the main to std, all pass by the winch and still lead aft. All feed cleanly onto the new (used) mast winches. Tropical Itch 1991-2 |
