Posts: 310 04/17/06 14:09:56	Tags : None I have to work with my Mechanic about problem that occured last Nov when hauling boat from our private marina. Boat not used for 3 weeks, else used constantly. Engine started up beautifully. Nothing "on" down below. Electronics on. MaxProp. Off mooring can't get rpms. Boat normally cruises 2800-3200 rpms. Can only get 1800-2000 rpms in gear No problems all season. No recent fuel. Major cruising all summer. Throttle cable seems ok. Fanbelt tight. Boat had to be moved from the mooring. Got to open water and she is sailed to the marina. RPMs consistant but really low. Each winter a new oil filter. Each spring both a new oil and fuel filter. Regular diesle sources for fuel. Prop inspected when hauled - fine. Normally gets 7.0 knots max. annually greased What is the problem ? Cathy

Posts: 197 04/17/06 18:41:54	Cathy, have you changed both primary and secondary filters? If so, I had similar problem. Turned out it was engine shutdown cable not completely releasing. Try disconnecting it at engine temporarily to see if problem disappears. You can shut down by moving lever on engine. Other possibility, fuel pump. Rick 704-3

Posts: 329 04/18/06 04:26:37	Cathy, Can you get normal maximum rpm out of gear? If you can, the governor and fuel rack are probably working correctly. What did the exhaust look like at max throttle? If you were full throttle at 2000 rpm, it should have been very smoky (black smoke). If it wasn't, it's likely to be a fuel delivery problem, clogged filters, the shutoff lever as Rick suggests, the throttle adjustment not allowing full throttle, or an injector problem. The high pressure pump usually works or doesn't work as it has to provide enough pressure to "pop" the injectors. If your engine has an air filter in the silencer, check it as well. Diesels are pretty simple. Plenty of air, clean fuel delivered at the right time at sufficient pressure, and compression is about it. Larry Melelana Catalina 42 # 175 1990 3cbn, wk Solomons, MD

No white or black smoke. good rpms out of gear but in gear not good seems the throttle cable is ok, nut tight but I started fooling with that. Shut off cable was new three years ago. I don't see that the problem. could the yard have put the wrong fuel filter in ? this I will try to investigate... Never had an engine issue before. I am not that familiar with the fuel pump, will research that. I don't think it was a fuel problem or stirred up sentiment issue. Will keep you posted. Cathy

Posts: 216 04/18/06 06:15:36	If it is a fuel starvation problem you can check by running along at about 1500-1600 with the engine in gear and the boat moving then advance the throttle quickly. If the engine speeds up and then fades it's a fuel supply problem. The reason is there is a small amount of reserve fuel in the fuel pump that is consumed within a few seconds. If the engine just comes up to your limited speed and holds steady then it's something with the throttle cable or internal to the fuel rack. Usually a clogged filter will cause low but unsteady rpms. My money is on the filters or in-tank fuel pick up tube. I have a outboard motor type squeeze bulb between the tank and primary filters (duplex type) that was installed to help prime the filters when they are changed. It also acts as a good fuel system check. With the engine off you can pump fuel up through the primary and engine fuel filters and hear it run back through to the tank. There is very little backpressure.

Posts: 28 04/26/06 16:46:50	One of the two fuel pumps could be the problem. You can check the low pressure pump by pulling it off and observing the stream. As I remember it is a little diaphram reciprocating pump. Mine had a similar problem severla seasons ago and the diaphram had a small tear in it. It could keep up with low demand, higher RPM it leaked back and didn't keep up. The high pressure pump to the injectors is harder to check without pulling the injector body. Posts: 246 04/27/06 04:01:38	Looking at you interval of fuel /oil filter replacement, I guess you do not motor to much. I go through 4 aux fuel filters and 1- 2 primary fuel filter a year with the rational being that the aux catch most of the junk. The aux fuel filter always is black, which is the fungus that grows on the filter and floats in the fuel. I go through about 6 oil filters. I put about 150-200 hours on the engine a year with about 125-140 hours on a six week trip in the Bahamas. Your diesel is an oil pump. it pumps oil for lubrication and oil for fuel. Clean oil = no problems. Change your filters more often and no problem. Let us know we are all interested in the problem.

Posts: 310 05/20/06 14:00:46	I had a situation last fall when bringing the boat to its winter home that I was loosing rpms at sea. It has been determined that the yard intalled a 2 micron instead of a 30 on my racor filter. It appeared to clog as a result. I suppose I would have thought we would have been fuel starved and that we would have lost alll power, not just about 1000 rpms. This is the T handle Racor on a 50 hp. I am now getting good power trialing the engine on the dock in gear. I have never had this happen before...... the wrong part put in and a clog as a result. CAthy in CT

Posts: 146 05/20/06 14:33:35	Cathy: FYI, I have a 2 micron Racor T handle on my 50hp and my vacuum gage shows no resistance (and the paper filter element looks fine) after 300 hours of use. Consider the possibility that you have dirty tank issues and the 30 micron filter is just passing them on to your on-engine filter. Just a thought. James White Star #450 Puerto Vallarta

Posts: 475 05/22/06 18:01:04	Had similar problem: RPM's going down, down. Shutting it down and waiting a few minutes would allow startup and normal operation. (Read: release vacuum in fuel line.) Changing fuel filters took care of it, 300 hours since no problem. When symptoms were described to a mechanic friend he did mention that sometimes BIG fueltank boogers get sucked ONTO the pickup in the tank. Shutting it down releases them. If fuel filters change does not solve the problem and inspection/possible cleaning of the tank might be in order. A vacuum gauge on fuel line is a great diagnostic tool. I plan on installing one.
