storing outboard motor in lazarette |

I've been told that I can fit my mercury 9.9 hp motor in my port side lazarette, but I'm not sure how to mount it. Does anyone else mount their motor in their lazarette, and if so do you have any pictures?

One word - don't. Its too heavy (84lbs) and you will be too off balance lifting it in and out. I had the pulpit reinforced and have mounted the Mercury 9.9 there - I also added a "lifting david" from Garhauer to have control in dropping it on the dingy. Works great. Peter C'est la Vie Hull #746 |

I have stored my Nissan 9.8HP four stroke in my starboard lazerette many times when I know I won't be using it soon and want the weight down lower. I handle it with a small boom I mount on my radar pole on the starboard stern section. The outboard has a special harness to lift it from the top. The boom has a block and tackle that lifts the engine out of the lazarette, swings the outboard out and lowers it on the inflatable engine mount. If you put wrap the engine head with padding and secure the engine in the lazarette you won't have any problem. I also built a mount that goes on the rear rail for when I plan to use the outboard frequently. I designed it so most of the weight of the engine sits on the starboard rear deck seat but so you can still open the compartment. This takes most of the stress off the rail and you don't risk bending something. The radar pole boom can also position the outboard to easily fit on the rail mount.
