Bimini enclosure - Connector side panels

Posts: 310 11/04/05 13:44:10	Tags : None Hello guys I am wondering how many of you have created side panel enclosures for your 42. My dear hubby wants them to keep our "livingroom" dry - increase space in bad weather as opposed to "keeping us warm". It would just increase space for the kids and dog during rain spells. We will not bother with a rear panel cause it seems that -- well, between the grill, davits, etc -- there is just too much going on back there. I suppose I could look into half panels, but frankly they may not be worth it there. Did you put your side enclosue outside or inside[/font] the life lines ? How did you work the side panel for the connector --- it is at such a "strange" angle it may necessitate TWO panels ? I would love to see any pictures of what folks have done.... I have changed my email to jibe-ho at snet.net for anyone interested in sending me anything colorful. We are getting a new bimini, sailcover and connector this winter. All advise appreciated. We are up in CT. Mom is concerned that we may look more like a powerboat when this is all over >???? !@!@!!@ CAthy in CT

Posts: 46 11/05/05 05:01:29	Cathy, I just ordered a full cockpit enclosure from Ship's Tailor in Deltaville, VA. I saw one they had constructed on another Catalina 42 (Gensis) and it was very nice. There are 2 side panels on each side and 3 panels across the stern. I had to also get a new connector as the one that came from Catalina was to loose and did not extend far enough outward on the bimini. The side panels will come inside the stern pulpit and lifelines. The aft panels will also come inside the stern pulpit so I will loose the use of the observation seats when the panels are not rolled up. All in all, it looks like a pretty good system they have. I decided I needed a full cocpit enclosure after taking a Catalina 36 down the ICW this past September and being eaten alive by bugs and fighting numerous rain downpours from tropical storm Tami!!! Posts: 0 11/05/05 10:30:41	Cathy: You ask a complicated qustion. Much of this is dependant on which deck you have, which stern rails you have, and what you want out of your enclosure. So far, we have just bought the dodger, bimini, and connector. We've found that we leave those up 99.9% of the time, regardless of the weather. My bimini is supported off the stern rail...full width. My idea is to enclose the stern rail seats. But, I'm having trouble with all the other "stuff" on the stern rail. Plus, there's a big gap to fill between the seat where the rail dives back forward to the ladder. I've seen many enclosures that leave the stern rail outside. This is especially true on early Mk II's and earlier. The shape of the deck lends itself well to this. But the legs of the bimini go right to the deck between your feet while sitting in the stern rail seat...don't like that. I have pictures of a new boat with a full enclosure where the enclosure goes to the rail, but the seats are ignored and left outside, though they have zip open panels so they can be used. (Thanks to Pierre for the tour.) I have two words for you...Mock Up. We're talking big money here. Suggest you work with your canvas guy and build a mock up with pvc pipe and cheap blue tarps or drop cloths. You are absolutely right about doing the "mock up" and I will get some duct tape and create panels with tarps come spring. I really am a control freak and want to be sure I am getting exactly what I ask for. CAthy

Posts: 10 11/05/05 18:24:05	Cathy, We've just completed our enclosure. Well, nearly so anyway. Canvasman will be back out on Tuesday for a few finishing touches. Our boat has the factory bimini (the wide version-attached to the side rails) and the factory supplied connector between it and the dodger. We struggled with the issues already mentioned - whether or not to include the observations seats, how many panels, and what about all that stuff already hanging on the rails? In the end we decided to include the seats in the enclosure and settled on two panels for each side and three for the back. It turned out to be kinda large but it's very effective in it's goal to create a protected "porch". If you like, I'll be happy to send you some photos so that you can see how it turned out done our way. It might help you decide which parts or design features you like (or don't) before making your own plans. As for cost? About $1800.00 and we're in Alameda, hopefully labor rates are more reasonable where you are. Michael C42 #930 2/pullman Milagro Alameda, CA

Posts: 66 11/06/05 13:52:40	Cathy, We have a full enclosure which we leave up all season. We are in Holland Michigan so it is cool at the beginning and end of the season. Thus, we extend our season because we have the enclosure. It goes outside the life lines and stern seats. The enclosure is beige in color. It makes the cockpit look absolutely huge. When we leave the boat the enclosure is fully zipped closed. When we return the cockpit is clean. We close it up at night. Our cockpit is dry in the morning when everyone else is wet. When it is 55 to 60 degees out we are in tee shirts in the cockpit. Many paople like to sleep in the cockpit under the stars with the enclosure closed. When it is raining you are dry. As you can see there are many advantages. There are some drawbacks. You need to flip two panels up when docking. Docking can be more awkward until you develop a system. Access to your boat at the stern is not as easy. For example to access the dingy at the stern I have to remove the center stern panel. On hot days you need to take 5 minutes to remove some of the panels and store them below. You find yourself zipping and unzipping panels. However, the advantages far out weigh the disadvantages. Our enclosure was made by Muskegon Awning in Muskegon Michigan. It is about 6 years old. I will send you some pictures.

Posts: 310 11/06/05 21:11:03	More pictures. I love this group. I am surprised at how many of the connectors have HUGE windows. Our canvas people would comment that "they would puddle". I understand WHY you are doing it, but I just am not seeing that out here in New England. It may be something we will want to consider and that part of the project will not be started till spring. Again, I appreciate the photos. My husband and young son LOVE to sleep out in the cockpit. Having a clear panel to see the stars is something the kids would get a kick out of also. In any event, I posted some to a web location so you could have a look. There are a couple with the bimini up but no side curtains and then some with the full enclosure installed. Kinda 'clunky' looking with them up but, from the inside, it's a heck of a screened in porch. It's pretty darned good at screening the sun and wind (reduces it markedly) and will slow down the bugs. Except for the persistent ones, anyway. I hope these are of some help to you.
