Posts: 138 10/28/05 04:44:23	Tags : None Will need to replace batteries in the spring, am considering AGM's . What is the trick if any in in lifting the batteries that weigh about 125 lbs each out if the battery box in the garage, there is not enough room to get on top of them to get a good vertical pull, nor is there room for to people to lift at the same time, I had thought that the rear of the box was removable and that one could pull them out thru the port lazerete but that does not seem to be the case. Posts: 327 10/28/05 12:36:34	Dave, As Archimedes said: "Give me a lever and a place to stand and I'll move the world" Your batteries should have "handles" that you can attach a line to make a lifting sling. Use a stout handle on top of a fulcrum aft of the battery locker as a lever. I'd use one of those keel blocks most yards seem to have laying about for the fulcrum. Have a helper slip 2 2X4s under the battery once it's up. Slide it forward on the 2X4s to a point where a helper can assist in getting it to the companionway. From there, a block and tackle from the boom or the main halyard should get it up and out. Use 6 volt batteries in series next time. They are "only" about 65 lbs each and will give you more amp hours in the same space (up to 480 amp hours for a series/parallel combination of 4 6 volt golf cart batteries). Trojan is showing an AGM 6 V but it only delivers 200 amp hours vs 240 from a flooded T-125. Good luck Larry Melelana Catalina 42 #175 3 cbn, wk Solomons MD

Posts: 89 10/28/05 14:03:55	Dave, we went to 6V AGM's in June. I had Diversified do the job. Two guys took out the 4D's, and I had 8 6V Lifelines placed in the "garage" with very little change in the box. The hold downs were the only things changed. We put 2 batteries in the forward location with virtually no change in the box. One of the batteries is installed on it's side. That is easily done with AGM's. We now have 880 AMPs in the house bank, and a separate (in the port lazarette) starting battery (Group 31). Those two guys easily took out the 4D's in about 2 hours. Most of the rest of the effort was in the cables and the hold downs in the rear box. The whole job was done in a day. Steve Snyder www.finelion.net

Posts: 252 10/28/05 16:35:54	I extended the battery handles just enough that I could slip an approx 6ft 2x4 thru the loops fore-aft. With one person in the lazerette and one in the "garage" area just fwd of batteries, we could lift the batteries out of the boxes and slide them fwd onto galley floor. Steve 642-2f TESA

Posts: 246 10/29/05 04:30:05	REMOVE the screws that hold the panels around your battery and you will find how easy battery removal is. after replacing three sets os batteries I said there must be an easier way. it takes about 5 minutes to remove the screws and the ease of removal is great.

I used them for 6 years, including a 6 month cruise to mexico and when I sold the boat to buy my C42, they were still strong. If long term and easy to use are what you need, they are worth the money. We bought "Lifeline" brand. Do not get Gels. James $450 "White Star"

Posts: 127 10/30/05 12:41:29	I removed the 4-Ds in 1999 and installed four Trojan T-105 golf cart batteries. I just replaced them last month, not because there was any sign of a problem, but because after 6 years, I do not want to take a chance on one failing while overseas. They cost $70 each and are fairly easy to handle. IMHO definitely the way to go....no need for anything more expensive. Colin

Posts: 38 11/28/05 17:24:11	Go with the AGM's. We also used Lifeline. One suggestion, have lots of baking soda on hand and pour some around the batteries before you lift them out. Ours had boiled over multiple times, previous owner, and I went through a few pounds to neutrilize the acid. Also ware acid resistant gloves and have everything covered that acid could spill on. If you have someone help the entire removal is a breeze. With AGM the reinstall is also easier on the nerves. Dont forget to have your charger updated or add one that accommodates AGM batteries.

Posts: 138 12/01/05 06:59:45	Several skippers have stated that they remove the panels around the battery box ?? my battery box in #810 (2002) appears to be a single fiberglass box 23" X 24" , I do not see any panels to remove, the batteries have to be lifted straight up . Yes we do have access to the garage from the lazzerete. Dave Zeuli Common Sense

Posts: 89 12/01/05 09:28:09	Dave, I think the "panels" are refering to the 4D at the base of the mast. You need to unscrew the panel that goes around the battery for removal and installation. It's very easy.
