The first half of the trip was under motor from Portland to the Strait of Juan de Fuca with an overnight in Astoria. There wasn't much wind or sea for this portion. She motored beautifully and used less than 2/3 of a tank of fuel. Half way down the Strait we got some following winds and seas and went the rest of the day under sail. Wow what a ride. We surfed at up to 12 knots at times by the GPS. One hitch that we had was the Northsails G2 Gennaker was flying when the winds kicked up to 25kts and was very difficult to snuff because the lines in the snuffer weren't set up correctly. It took 3 guys, one a gorilla to get it down. That was exciting, I thought the boat might broach but Shane the captain didn't think we were close to that. Then next day we got the lines properly set up and had a terrific run under Gennaker alone. What a beautiful sail.
After the trip, a few things need fixing and maybe you guys have some input.
First, the cabinet latches are breaking like crazy. The dealer in Portland had already replaced one and 2 of them disintegrated on the trip. What gives with that??? Is anybody replacing the factory ones with ones that will actually stand up?? I notice Gary Willis addressed the problem in Mainsheet Feb 2007 and made it sound like the latches were from a defective batch in 2006 and that the problem was addressed. My boat was made in March 2007 and I can assure you that the problem has not been addressed.
Also, a couple of bulbs are burned out and I don't know what the replacements are. Both of the brass gimbaled lamps in the main cabin a burned, where do you get the replacement for that? Also, is the bulb in the engine room a flurescent bulb by chance??? I tried replacing the burned bulb with a regular filament bulb and it glows ever so slightly (only noticeable in almost total darkness). Obviously that is not the correct bulb. What are the specs on the proper bulb?
Third, the knotmeter is not reading accurately. We tried calibrating it by the manual but the manual doesn't seem correct in how to perform that procedure.
If anybody has some insight into some of these issues I would love to hear it.
All the best
Randy
