fellow captains I am getting ready to pull my boat on march 20th and I need to change my trans oil as I did not do it this past fall I have a 1989
44 hp yanmar any helpful hints would be great is there a drain plug or should you just pump out and add oil and how much. Thanks Phil second wind #95 annapolis |

IMPORTANT
Remember to use 15W-40 ENGINE oil in the trans/gear box/clutch -- NOT any kind of automotive automatic trans fluid in the older C42s. (I have a 1989 also.) (not sure what the newer C42s use) See interesting thread/story last Sept/Oct on this issue. Dave

FWIW, in order to put in the exact amount I take out, I use those clear plastic containers (buy two) with exact graduations printed on the outside that you can get in paint or marine stores. I pump out ( I use a small hand pump) as much as I can into one container and then add new oil to the new container to the exact line as the old, and put that in the trannie. This assumes your trannie is correctly filled to start with. Better not to over fill. And, if you have your original engine manual, there is a place that will tell you which trannie model uses engine oil and which uses ATF. Your trannie model is molded onto the body of the trannie just above where the shaft comes out on the aft side. Good luck... James |

Jim and Dave thanks for your response on changing trans fluid.It does look like there is just regular engine oil in the trans case and not automatic trans
fluid which is red in color. I did find
a quart of 15-40 oil in the rear locker so that is probably what the past owner was using.as I do not have a manual I have been relying on the forum for most of my questions.Thanks c42 owners for your help. Phil second wind #95 |

In regards to changing trans fluid I called yanmar just to make sure on the correct oil to use the tech rep there did tell me on the older yanmars 4jhbe
models to use 30 wt oil only not 15-40. Great guy very friendly. The name of the company was Mach boring 908-964-0700 and ask for tech support if you ever have
any technical questions that need answering.
