Posts: 280 11/17/07 12:27:00 Moderator	Tags : None One thing that bugs me about sailing the 42 is when you are heeled over and let's say driving from the high or windward side and sitting on the coaming, it's a long way down to the other side of the cockpit particularly if you are taking spray in the cockpit the sole becomes an ice skating rink. Racers typically have a molded in brace on the sole to give you support when heeled over and I've seen teak braces too but was wondering if any of you have added this feature themselves somehow and how well you like it or do I simply need a better pair of Sperry's? -Thanks. There's only one other 42 that I know of that has this and that is Wind Dancer out of Ventura, Ca. The owner (PK Edwards) and boat were featured in Mainsheet a number of years ago and does the TransPac and other highly competitive coastal races very successfully. With the potential for having to endure day after day of being heeled over going to weather, it helps to have a foot brace to ease the strain. The 42 does not have very aggressive non-skid anywhere on the boat and this is an item I've thought about adding to the sole of the cockpit. Thoughts?? Garry "Breezn" #502 2-Cabin

Posts: 257 11/18/07 19:53:56	I agree, the non-skid on the C42 is just adequate when things get wet. I've built a teak grating for the cockpit floor around the helm area. While this isn't a platform, it doesn't matter what shoes you are wearing, you won't slip. I'm planning on expanding it to the entire cockpit floor soon. Steve 642-2f TESA

Posts: 275 11/19/07 06:39:26	Non-skid is a compromise. On our previous boat, a C400, the non-skid was the equivalent of sand embedded in paint. It was very effective, but it would also rip skin off knees and hands if the opportunity was presented. Posts: 56 11/19/07 09:56:05	Gary, All kidding aside,I agree the 42s nonskid is just OK- not great.I have teak cockpit grates ,like Steve from Tesa.My grates have 20 coates of Bristol Varnish on them and look fantastic.We all know this is crazy.Slippery when healed and trecherous when wet.I ment to put walnut shell layers on but forgot and got caught up in the perfect coat syndrom.This winter I am finishing them with the walnut shell nonskid.I am only bring this up because when healed on my boat the grates really work to keep you stationed and not slipping(if not covered with Varnish)I am in del Rey, stop by sometime and I'll show you you the finished grates.Thanks, Steve Leshner Batucada,2 cab #386, Marina Del Rey Ca.

Posts: 140 11/20/07 11:54:52	We have the teak cockpit grate from Catalina , we had the same on our c34. we do not use any finish on it only soap and water . the c 34 grate still looked great after 13 yrs with NO repairs. the footing is great and dry as the water flows under to the scuppers . Posts: 123 11/25/07 08:30:43	Has anyone used "Tek-Dek" or a similar artificial teak decking? I hve seen it some boats ( San Diego and Dana Point) and it looks great. I do have a sample provided by the manafacture and it would seem to provide a very good non-skid but reasonably "skin friendly" surfance. Any thoughts? Mark Izablue #835/3
