I feel I am missing the correct transom/sseat configuration for my 93 MK1. Does anyone have a photo of what is supposed to be from the factory?

I have hull #386- 1993.The helm seat is supported by a curved wood contraption and nestels into teak brackets. It is way too short to see over the wheel and
stearing that way is uncumfortable.I am not near the boat now and do not have a pic,but you are not missing much.I actually have taken mine off the boat and
put it in storage.

We purchased a Helm Seat (note spelling of web site) at http://www.helmseat.com and find it is great fo long distance
crusing. We take it down for racing.

Thank you,
Currently I have a raised bench type seat permanently mounted in the walk through transom. It is comfortable enough but a lot to climb over top of to access the wind vane and transom. I am hoping to design or purchase something that can hinge or swing out of the way????? Chris |

Chris,
Many owners have followed the advice of Steve's earlier post and simply removed the helm seat from the boat all together. The advantages are as follows:

I too agree with the concept of using an helm seat especially on long trips such as Desolation or Chatterbox Fall etc.
The people at Blue Heron sold me mine for my Cat 36. When I bought my 42, I contacted Al and he advised that I could use the same seat but the legs would have to be modified in length for the 42. For those who prefer not to have the fibreglass seat in the middle, then a longer set of legs can be purchased so that you can use the walk through. Don Paget C950 |

I found the Helm Seat awkward for my long legs on our C-42 #918. We found that a 50 quart cooler from West Marine fits perfectly on the fiberglass insert,
added the cusion and we not only we had perfect height and leg room, but also our cold refreshments are close at hand!

Re: Don's comment on the Helm Seat. When Al (who is really a good guy) made ours we had it made with the longer legs. That did not last more that a few
weeks. The reason is that the longer legs make storage much more difficult. We ended up going back to the original length legs that sit on the fiberglass seat.
Al also did another mod for us. Both Misty and I like to be up high (she is only 5' 2" but I am 6' 6") Al redid the back mounting so that the seat actually is anchored to the top rather than the middle rail. The bottom of the seat comes off an "L" shaped bracket that is about halfway between the top and bottom life rail. This raised the seat perhaps 6" higher than "stock." It gets Misty up where she would like to be, and adds extra room for my long legs.
