I would be interested to hear from anyone who has increased the insulation in their refrigerator/freezer. I have an older model 42 (hull #146, 3 cabin) and by just sound testing the walls inside the refrigerator feel that there is not much insulation behind the walls. I am sure that Catalina did insulate the box but over the years I am wondering if the insulation has separated from the refrigerator walls. Either way, I am considering removing the counter top and checking the insulation or adding some if necessary to obtain at least 4 - 6" where possible.

I have a friend who owns a Catalina 400. he found some insulation material that is only about 1/4" thick and rated R16!!! He lined the inside of his reffers with it using two-sided tape, and has a large piece that he lays over the top access doors when not in use. He claims he has reduced his power consumption by about 40%.

I'm going to try it myself, when I get around to it -- probably some time this winter.

The material is called REFLECTIX -- See WWW.REFLECTIXINC.COM

Good luck, enjoy the Carribbean.
