Installation of additional batteries |

I have a 3 cabin 2007 model and was wondering if anyone out there has installed an additional set of batteries. Where would you place them ? I think I would
use golf cart this time. What would be a typical wiring diagram for this set up? I envision useing another switch for this purpose.

Hi Don
On Threepenny Opera I removed the 3 4D batteries and replaced them with 8 Trojan T105 batteries. There are 2 T-105s in the port settee, 4 in the existing battery compartment and 2 in a Blue Sea battery box that I installed in the port lazarette just aft of the existing battery compartment. I installed 2 large 600amp buss bars and wired all of the batteries together as a single bank, which I connected to position 1 of the battery switch. During the 2007 season I used the single house bank to be a start battery as well, but I am in the process of installing a group 27 starting battery on a shelf I built over the water heater to act as a start battery. I have a Cole Hersee battery combiner, that will charge both batteries simulataneously, but will disconnect once the charging load is removed. In the off chance that I need to start from the house bank, I carry a short set of automotive booster cables that will be more than sufficient to add the house bank to the starting circuit. Of course I will install a separate battery shut off switch for the starting battery. In total I have 900ah from the 8 T105s and another 80 amps from the group 27. Addison

Suggest you have a look at the Blue Sea Systems Dual Circuit battery switch ( http://bluesea.com/viewresource/68 ) in place of the jumper cables. I installed one last year in a set up similar to yours. One switch turns all the 12V on the boat on and off and an additional quarter turn allows the house bank to feed the starter. I kept an additional On-Off switch between the dual circuit switch and the starter to allow me to shut off power to the starter while working around the engine and still keep house loads (including the engine compartment light) energized.

You probably have thought this through and have a good reason for additional batteries, but for what it's worth, we have cruised for several years with no
additional battery capacity. We substituted golf cart batteries for the standard house bank and modified the wiring so that our windlass battery also serves as
our starting battery.
We have lots of alternative energy capacity (solar panels and wind generator). If you are cruising, generating the power in the first place is the issue rather than storing it. If on the other hand, you want to charge the batteries at your home marina and then go out for a few days and not worry about charging, then more batteries makes sense. Not to hijack the thread, but I thought I would throw that in the hat. Colin
