rake of the mast
Ahoy, our boat is located in NEngland and we are getting the commissioning started. I had my 10 yr old rigging inspected and nothing turned up. Now that the "stick is in" I wonder how much "rake" most C42s sport. I don't think I am pleased with mine. I hung a big wrench from the main halyard. It appears to swing about 12 inches aft of the mast. I thought in old posts that someone suggested they had theirs about 2" aft the mast --- now that is a straight mast. Can folks comment on if one can really control the amount by smacking the mast wedges ? I can't figure how to reduce it with our forestay. Cathy in CT |

Re: rake of the mast
Cathy, Mast wedges won't do it. I think the commisioning guide that came with the boat has a suggested amount of beginning rake. Then tune from there. This might be a good time for the same rigger who did the inspection to walk you through tuning the rig. It's not hard and he can talk about the impact on weather helm, point, mast bend, etc of each adjustment. 12" of rake sounds a lot, but my guide os on the boat. Good luck, Larry
