Is there an active sail club in SF Bay. We would like to meet other 42 catalina who enjoy getting out on the water and sailing, anchoring, short off shore trips. I noticed fleet 9 's roster is a few years old. Is it still active and is there a current link. Thanks Bob (SF Bay)

Bob, contact Tim Koester for fleet 9 info. His contact info is listed at the "Fleet Roster" button on the C-42 page (www.catalina42.org). Fleet 9, at least to my knowledge, has not done any recent cruising activities but there is a sizable group of Catalina 42 owners at Encinal Yacht Club in Alameda. We generally participate in EYC's monthly cruise-outs. Any questions regarding EYC, you can contact me at rodney_k(nospam)sbcglobal.net. Of course, substitute the @ symbol for (nospam).

I work with Tim and know him well. He has been inactive for several years. His name is listed just because they haven't taken it off and no one has taken his place. If someone wants to take it over for him, I'm sure he would be glad. At one time, the salesman at Farallone Yachts, Mr Goodsell said he would take over but I haven't seen anything happening yet.

My understanding is that Fleet 9 is indeed looking for a Captain. If someone would like to step forward and organize an event, please do so and let me know!

Re: SF Bay club | #4 | ||

I stand corrected re Tim Koester. He is a member of EYC and did join us for a few cruises this past summer including our week long Delta cruise. He handed out Fleet 9 burgees during one cruise. So at least he is using his boat.
I only mentioned EYC because there are about 2 or 3 C-42s that regularly go on the EYC monthly cruises. Member boats are X to Sea, Sashay, Destiny, Windward, and most recently, Strangebird and Pair a Dox. I am probably missing a couple. A couple of years ago, John Foy on Destiny tried to revive Fleet 9 but quickly found it to be like trying to herd cats. I am half tempted to apply for the fleet captain job but being a 2 time commodore at EYC and still being a corporate slave tempers that urge. How about Fleet 9 36 Catalina club | #5

Thanks for the feed back. It would be great to get things going again. I heard the Fleet 9 (36) club is real active. Has anyone cruised with them.

Re: How about Fleet 9 36 Catalina club | #6

We upgraded from a C36 this past summer and have remained involved with the (very active) C36 Fleet 9 since. Another of the group just made the same move a few weeks ago and I know they intend to continue participating with their 36 friends. In fact several members have moved on to other makes or models but remain active with the fleet.
They put together a sail out for almost every month - keeping it close for 2 day weekends and ranging further on the long weekends. Unlike the C34 group, these folks don't race (well, OK, whenever there are two boats headed in the same direction........) they cruise. Just this past weekend the destination was Ayala Cove. We got there early on Friday, grabbed a mooring, and were soon flanked by other earlybirds. 3 more arrived Saturday morning so we ended up with 5 C36's strapped to either side of our 42. It's a good group and we all had a great time. As many C42's as there are around the Bay, it would be nice to see (and participate in) an active Fleet 9. I do not yet possess the depth of experience that many (most) other C42 owners have but would still be happy to help where I could and would certainly participate. Michael

Does anybody have current contact info for Tim Koester. I have tried to contact him via phone and e-mail with no success. Perhaps Steve on Tesa can let him know that I would like to contact him re Fleet 9 SF Bay

Rod,
Roger Goodsell has shared with me your possible (and contingent?) interest. Thanks for your willingness to get involved. For whatever it's worth, I've identified a possible treasurer. She's presently serving in that position for another, very active, SF Bay Catalina Fleet but has recently acquired a C42 and would make the change if asked. Please feel free to email me directly at mstouffer@wsgc.com and let me know how (or, if) I can be of help. Michael

I know Tim is out of town right now so it may take a few weeks before you get an answer. I'd be surprised if he wasn't happy to let you take over.

All,
I heard from Tim via e-mail today. He & I will be transitioning the fleet captain job over to me. I will also be working with Roger Goodsell at Farallone Yachts to develop an updated roster for the SF Bay Fleet. Look for more communications very soon. Rodney,
This is great news! Please keep me posted -- I'd be very interested in joining the group. The Goodsells are friends and Dinah sold us our C42. Rod Williams

I had contact with Tim Koester about 6 years ago. We were boat shopping and we were interested in getting an Ericson 38. If memory serves, I repsponded to his advertisement for ahis E38 in the Bay Area but by the time I called he had sold it and had purchased his 42. We spoke on the phone and he was generous with his time giving me a user's report on the Ericson. I did end up looking at 3 or 4 Ericsons but hadn't settled on one that had the right combination of price and condition. (Some brokers may have actually misprepresented the boats they had listed!) Ursa Minor, the former "Glory Days" in Tacoma came on the market and was priced to get our attention so we never got around to owning an Ericson 38. Give my regards to Tim when you talk to him.
