Any ideas why the fridge should gradually stop icing up? Freon or pipes? Or thermostat? The compressor seems to work fine and the unit gets colder more quickly, though still slow, when the engine is running whereas it worked fine on batteries before. I'ts on a 96 MKII so might be original charge of freon.

If the evaporator stays warm in the box there is an electrical problem or a refrigerant problem. If the compressor is running and there is no cooling, then the trouble will be a lack of refrigerant or refrigerant flow.
Check that the condenser is not clogged with dust and dirt (assuming that your system is air cooled). The condenser is located adjacent to the compressor and will have a fan to pull air over the condenser fins. Clean with a vacuum and brush taking care not to bend the cooling fins. If it doesn't work after cleaning the condenser coils, the lack of frost is probably due to a loss of refrigerant. AB reefers and boat reefers in general do not "lose" refrigerant as they are a sealed system. When a system has lost refrigerant there is a leak, if the leak is not found and the system recharged, a repeat service call will be required.  |

The frig is nine years old. How old are the batteries? Limited or reduced amperage/voltage from deteriorated batteries could be the culprit. Poorly sealed or deteriorated seals could also inhibit cooling.
