Is there anything avail to show me the location of all the thru hull valves? I am enjoying Hull #822, 2002, 2cabin center line. Thanks.

First of all, most hulls will be different. There are several configurations, several optional thru hull devices (watermaker, genset intake, salt water fridge intake...).
My feeling is the best thing to do is make a clean copy of a deck layout page from your Catalina owners guide. Then at the next haulout, mark it up, putting it back in the owners guide. If you need it before a haulout, scramble around in the bilge making your best guess where every valve is & what it does (marking up this copy I talked about above). Be sure to close/open a few times each thru hull valve as they need to be excersised. Monthly is my goal, sometimes it is quarterly. While you're at it, I recommend getting a kit or 2 of tapered soft-wood temp plugs (most marine stores carry them). Be sure to keep them dry. Once they become wet, they become much less effective. The intention is for them to expand a bit when they get wet, making a tighter fit. ~~~~_/)~~~~

I crawled through the boat untill I found them all, and knew what each one did. Then I made a diagram. I close them ALL, EVERY time I leave the boat for more than a day. This does three things:
1: I know where they are, I can find them in the dark, eyes closed. 2: They all operate smoothly. 3: Most boats sink in the dock when a hose pops....I'm (hopefully) enjoying best possible odds. Furthermore I close ones not in use when sailing in lively conditions. (MarkI, 3C) All three sinks are on starboard and have overflowed with the gunnels under. Macerators stay closed unless in use. I suspect sea water can find it's way back into the holding tanks. Shower drains stay closed. Same with AC when not in use. The only one always open when underway is engine intake. The less holes there are in the boat, the smaller the chance that the high bilge water alarm goes off...... Most of the stories I've read that had the phrase "floating floorboards" in them, had some sort of through hull ordeal in there somewhere too. Yes, I also have bungs and a hammer. |

Most suggest tying the plugs to the thru hulls. I drilled holes and used dental floss to tie them.
A rubber mallet is a great thing to have on board also. Some sugget an axe too....... so that one might be able to chop into the floorboards if one had to quickly locate where water was coming in --- in the event that one smashed into something at sea. I am not yet up to carrying an axe on board. dont' know where I would hide it. Maybe behind the forward head mirror ? cAThy in CT |

US Sailing safety regulations for offshore racing require tapered plugs for each thru-hull. This is a good idea for anyone, to have the right size plug tied to the thru-hull so you don't have to hunt for it when you have to have it. I also have a 6 x 8 ft plastic tarp with lines at each corner, so I could tie it over the outside of the hull covering a larger hole to slow the water coming in. Not my idea, but I cannot remember where I first saw it mentioned.

I have spare thru hull valves for all thru hulls.... I have replaced 2;;;; one broke in my hand at the dock and I ran to the store and relaced the thru hull.... Then I started carrying the spares and have relaced them in the bahamas at anchorage and under way 50 miles off shore

Hi Dale
I have broken the through hull in my boat (underneath the sink in the forward head) while replacing the head, its real cheap plastic or I am way stronger than I thought. Its in a very ackward position. I will be hauling the boat for new bottom paint at the end of the summer and replacing several critical through hulls - if you get a chart for the locations please e-mail it to me. Also when you are up at your boat can you measure the thickness of the bulkhead for me please (the one next to the chart table). I think its 5/8 but I am not sure.
