Posts: 72 04/17/06 07:29:45	Tags : None I'm in the process of upgrading my primary winches (Lewmar 50s) to new Lewmar 54s. I was limited to the 54s because of the size of the moulded in combing pocket designed to accept the primary winches. The problem with the old 50s is the old "wavespring" design - no spring loading to grab the lines. On my 1994 two cabin model, (hull #431) access to the starboard winch base is easy. There is a teak access plate in the overhead of the aft stateroom which is directly below the winch base, and the nuts can be easily removed. However, the port winch is directly above the passageway in the galley, & I couldn't find any means of access to the winch base. Does this mean I must cut into the overhead liner? Is there an aluminum plate which has been threaded to accept the winch base bolts? Is anyone aware of an access to this winch base? I can't believe this installation would be designed so that winch replacement would require interior surgery, & don't want to start drilling until I have better information. Thanks for any advice. Posts: 191 04/17/06 11:03:54	Jerry, I don't know if this would apply to your boat but on my 2 cabin MkII, inside the top compartment of the pantry, in the overhead, there is a round screw in access port. Posts: 277 04/17/06 14:15:59 Moderator	Jerry & James, There should be an inspection port - as Rodney suggests - to access the nuts for the primary winch on the overhead in the pantry. If not, you should be able to access the nuts from the "garage" as there is a gap in between the cabinet and overhead. The winch is mounted with an embedded backing plate and thru bolted. Posts: 144 04/18/06 06:16:45	All: It seem that Garry and Rodney have Mk IIs and Jerry and I have Mk Is and that is the critical difference. Because on our boats there are no access ports in either galley cabinet nor is there room to reach in from the garage; only about a 1 inch gap. Sounds like time for the Sawz-All. Perhaps some older hands on this forum can help us out on whether the winches are screwed into plates or if we have to cut holes somewhere. James s/v White Star Puerto Vallarta

Posts: 216 04/18/06 08:54:17	Our MkI is a 3 cabin and has a plywood access ports on both sides so not much direct help to you. I seriously doubt that Catalina bolted the winches in place before assembling the deck and liner so if there is no way to reach the back side it seems likely they embedded an aluminum plate at the winch base and it's been drilled and tapped like for the other deck hardware. I suggest you try removing the base bolts from above before cutting into the liner. If they are threaded into an embedded plate then no problem. If they are through-bolted with nuts you'll find out when they just spin round and round - then get out the Sawzall.

Posts: 72 04/19/06 07:25:37	Thanks to all. I checked again, and couldn't find any neans of access to the underside of the port primary winch. This must be particular to the Mk I two cabin model. I have one of the last built before the switch to Mk II. I have used a rotozip before rather than a sawzall to open holes in sealed areas of the boat, & will probably use the same tool to cut into the overhead. Depth control of the cut, as in a router, is easily set. Will the factory know if such surgery is necessary? This kind of installation doesn't seem common for Catalina. I would drill some small holes where you think the winch is and then cut a 6" hole and install an inspection port there once the job is finished. This is what the factory advises at this time.
