Posts: 317 02/25/05 16:10:29	Tags : None A friend called me today and we started talking about a problem on his Jeanneau. His raw water pump has started leaking badly. He has the same Yanmar as many C42's -- a 4JH3TE. Apparently he's learned that the suspected cause of the leak is a ceramic seal under the impeller, behind the wear plate. He's found that it's almost impossible to remove the water pump housing without removing a motor-mount. Has anyone encountered a similar problem on their C42? Is there any simple fix for getting at the ceramic seal without removing the entire pump? Has anyone removed the water pump on a 4JH3TE without having to remove a motor-mount? Is this something else requiring service in addition to changing impellers periodically? Thanks for any help. Posts: 327 02/26/05 06:13:57	Rod, Torresen Marine (Major Yanmar Dealer) runs a "Marine Engine" forum. The moderator is one of their top Yanmar guys. You can get to it at forums.torresen.com/sailing/. Yanmar has established exclusive distribution territories, so they may not be able to provide the parts he needs, but they can probably offer some advice. I just checked and there was a 4JH raw water pump seal question in late January. My 4JHE/TE parts catalog shows a pretty substantial seal behind the wear plate, held in by a circlip. It doesn't identify the material. Looks easy enough to change once the pump is on a workbench. From the Torresen site, the 4JH3 mechanical seal is listed as part # 129670-42560 and it lists for $20.19. Removing a mount is not that hard. If he counts threads and paints alignment stripes prior to removing it, he'll be pretty close on his alignment when he reinstalls the mount. I wasn't able to cross the 4JH3 to a specific pump, but Yanmar raw water pumps are listed from $658.00 to $1500.00. He'll certainly want to repair rather than replace. Unfortunately for my buddy here's a copy of a reply he received from another source: Yes I had to do the same repair last summer at about 600 hrs on my engine. You do have to remove the engine mount and the mount arm on the block itself. The pump must be removed to work on the seal. Johnson makes the pump and you can get the seal for much less then if you purchase it from Yanmar, (like about $45.00 less!) www.johnsonmarinepumps.com/ I used a fender to hold up the engine while I removed the mount and arm. Mark the engine mount threads so that you can get it back close to where it was before the repair as this will make aligning much easier. You will need to realign the engine when you are done, the seal can be removed without removing the shaft with a little work and some dental picks. Be sure to polish the shaft where the seal will ride, an Emory board works well for this. You will need the gasket from Yanmar for the pump to engine flange. The repair will cost you about $10.00 in parts and 5-6 hours in labor if you do it yourself. Best of luck, and you might want to order two seals as I damaged one on my first attempt to install it in the housing, a spark plug socket works well as a seal driver for this pump.
