Thank you for the follow-up on the flag socket. The photograph is wonderful. It appears that a stainless staff is the way to go. You probably saved me hours of work, and gave me some additional sailing time. (soon as the ice and snow go away)

I finally got around to taking a few photos of the pole Garhauer made. The right side shows the adjustable collar retained by allen screws. This allows the bottom support to be dropped to compensate for a stretchy nylon flag. Remember, it should be 48" across the top.

Thanks for the response. I have a good bit of teak around the boat. Teak may be the way to go. However, when the weather returns to somewhat seasonal in Annapolis, I may try both teak and SS and evaluate at that point.

As an added question, does anyone know the boom length for a standard rig 1989 Catalina 42 ?

My opinion on the flag staff is not to use wood. The rest of the stern rail... on the boat is 1" polished stainless, why not continue with ss. I have no other wood in the cockpit (except bin boards), why create other maintenance. I had Garhauer make a long pole with a fixed shackle on the top, to attach the top gromet of the flag. They then put a 1" slieve with 2 set screws welded to a shackle for the bottom grommet. This way, you can keep the stretchy nylon flag nice & tight. I...

Rick,

Instead of cobbling up couplers or whatever to make the teak staff fit the small-diameter flag staff socket, you might consider reducing the diameter at the end of the teak staff.

This is not as difficult as it might sound. The ideal tool would be a large lathe, but a professional-looking job can be done with a table saw or radial-arm saw. Take shallow cuts all around the outside of the staff. It takes a few minutes to...

Yes, the short stub is the flag staff socket.
If you use a stainless flag staff it would be best to drill a hole and be able to pin it with a cotter pin. A wood staff, unless it is way too small should be secure.

I have a 1989 three cabin 42. There is no flag staff socket installed on this boat. However, on the lower port aft rail, mid range, there is what could be described as a small 3 inch "stub" the same diameter as the rail. Could this be a portion of a flag socket...and if not, where would a new socket be installed ? I have searched photos of the stern of many catalina 42's...but to no avail.

Found a great old traditional teak flag staff in the trash cans at the dock about 10 months ago. The bottom plug had fractured. On a length day sail to Catalina Isl., I whittled and filed a new plug base that fit the existing 1 1/4" socket on the rear railing. Really like flying the flag from the staff as opposed to hoisting up a flag line to the spreader.
