Scott,

I left the alternator wired to the Perko switch so that it feeds the house bank with the switch in "1" and let the combiner take care of the start battery.

If for any reason I wanted to do it, the way I'm wired, switching to "all" on the switch bypasses the combiner. Switching to "2" sends the alternator to the start battery and the combiner would then charge the house bank. The Heart...

How is my alternator hooked into this whole thing? I am assuming at present that it is wired thru the Perko selector switch, but I haven't taken the switch apart to check it out yet.

If this is the case, I would imagine that I would take the alternator output straight to the house batteries and then let the combiner take care of the start. I am also assuming that I can parallel the output of the alternator to both house banks.

Scott, there are many ways to do this, but make sure the starter battery is always isolated from the house power unless you really want it combined. Using a combiner, a echo charger, a second alternator or diodes are just some of the ways to isolate the batteries. All have pros and cons.
I use an echo charger and have a separate switch that combines the starter battery to the house in case I need it, but it has a keyed lock and the key is no where near the switch.<!--EZCODE...

Scott,

I wired Melelana the way you are considering with the changes I suggested. Alternative is to use 3 on/off switches. 1 for the house bank, 1 for the start battery and 1 as an emergency parallel switch.

Electrically speaking, if you wire the house to position 1 and run a wire from the start battery to position 2 and from the same lug on the switch run another wire to the start battery switch, you've made the same set up...

Larry: Thanks for your reply. One of my (many) areas of confusion centers around the Perko selector switch. As I understand it, the selection of #1 or #2 dictates which battery bank supplies the current. It then allows one of the banks to be isolated from discharge and kept in reserve for emergencies. At present, I believe all electrical needs feed from the outflow of this switch, including the starter. If I were to keep the start battery on #1 and the house on #2 and always keep the...

Scott,

It sounds like you've got a good plan.

I'd make a couple of recommendations:

- Wire up a single bank instead of 2 for the house. You'll be able to spend a couple of days at anchor with refrig, fans, lights, stereo, etc and still not draw down to damaging levels. Various opinions on 1 or 2 house banks, but given you're Chesapeake Bay plans, simpler is better.
