Heck, I'm nervous with my 1000w MSW inverter...

Volts x Amps = Watts

1000 watts / 12 volts = 83 amps

Call it an even 100 amps to account for efficiency loss.

So, 3000 watt inverter, pushing 300 amps. Ought to be able to drain the batteries pretty quickly at that rate!

I added the Xantex 3000W inverter to our boat. I figured this way we can run the water heater, microwave, and any hairdryer known to man. I installed a switch in the aft starboard lazzeret next to the galvanic isolator. The switch only allows either the shore power or the inverter to supply AC power to the boat. There is no way both can be on at the same time due to the sliding lockout on the switch. The inverter has provided us with AC for quite awhile now and we love it.
...

The Samsung microwave on hull 600 is labled at 850 watts. That's one of the reasons why I got a Honda 1KW generator, which puts out 900 watts continous, 1000 watts for a very short time. The Honda always trips off with the microwave on. I did furthur testing to see it actually draws 1150 watts, think the 850 watts is the actual output, cooking watts. Then there is the start up wattage which is quite a bit higher to start the motor. What all that means is Steve is right, need at least 1200...

I installed an 1800 watt Xantrex inverter and integrated it into the AC wiring. Get the machine that comes with the transfer switch. That means that the inverter senses if there is shore power, if there is it does not use the batteries. Because it is integrated, the only extra step is to turn on the inverter (small remote panel) and use the AC switches on the panel. By the way, I only use it to power the AC outlets, NOT THE WATER HEATER. You will enjoy the convenience.

On Common Sense #810 we installed the xantrex 1000 watt inverter, which we did not cross connect to to the ships AC or DC systems, totaly separate.
the duplex outlet that the microwave is plugged into (in the galley cabinet) I split and labled , 1/2 is for Ac and the other is for DC , when the micro is need at sea the captraintress plugs the cord into the AC side,we have plenty of power to run the micro.
I also installed dedicated AC duplexes off the inverter...

The microwave on board requires approx 1200 watts so you should get something that large or larger. I bought a generator relay from an RV store that automatically changes over to the inverter whenever you disconnect the shorepower. The relay is energised by the shore power and switches to inverter when power to the relay coil is interupted. Remember to switch off the 110v battery charger if you are running the inverter or you'll run down your batteries fast.
Steve...
