Hi Lee,
Are you purchasing "Second Wind"?, if so I know this boat, I've been on it and wanted to purchase her several years ago.
I know where it was in charter, and she is a beautiful vessel.
I responded not to long ago to you first request to buying a "1989 catalina 42". My ordeal was a bit involved, but "Troubador " is afloat this date, and a great pleasure to own and operate. I'm in Pasadena, MD.. Kept three...

I recommend David Manning very highly. I have owned 2 42's. 89s. The first survey was fairly superficial. Pretty much suggesting that this is what you get on a 89.

Last year I also purchased a 42, hull 125 in Annapolis. The broker recommended David. David comes from a family that has a fiberglass boat building business so he has good knowledge of fiberglass boats. He covered issues in my survey that my previous surveyor wouldn't even have thought of....

I've owned hull 175 (1990 3bn, wk) for 5 years now. Lots of good advice here, but the best thing you can do is get the very best surveyor you can find. Interview a couple and get references. If you share where the boat is located, folks on this board might know a good surveyor they can recommend. Before you commit to a survey, spend a full day conducting your own "pre survey." Be brutal and honest with yourself about what you find and then...

I've owned hull 94 since 1991. Kept in fresh water until 2000. I've replaced the rudder (3 years ago due to post corrosion and seepage into the rudder). If the top rudder to post seal is allowing water to penetrate the rudder, the fix is not grinding away some of the rudder and repairing - replace the rudder as the corrosion has usually gone the full length of the post. Check the lower "bearing surface" for wear which allows the rudder to wobble at that point. That is an easy...

I purchased my 1989 three cabin 2 years ago in Norfolk, VA.
As in the Movie 'Willie Wonka' in the words of Gene Wilder "Little surprises around each corner, but none to dangerous". Check the rudder for large blisters at the very bottom. If you find one and rupture it, you may find enough water inside to wask out a six inch deep gully under the rudder, in the sand. Then further check to see if you find rusty discoloration at the top of the exposed rudder post. If...

Hello Mal,

I originally called Garhauer with the idea of purchasing the 3-point system. When I told the guy at Garhauer my plan he offered up the free recall. I did install their recalled part for 1 year but eventually went to the 3-point as part of a larger project, mostly to get the 6:1 ratio on the traveller control instead of the stock 4:1. Otherwise the free upgrade was fine. I don't still have the recall replacement part since I traded it to a guy...

The only thing that comes to mind is the main sheet traveller. The original design had a flimsy bail that will fail. Catalina and Garhaur have a free recall replacement. Even better is to upgrade to the 3-point as shown on Norm Perron's improvements. Go to the home C42 site, Craftsman's Corner and Hull 600 improvments.

Everything else would depend on a good survey for structural damage or maintenance issues.
