Hi Jim
Congratulations on your decision. You will find that your new Catalina 42 is a very easy sailing boat in almost all conditions. You will not be disappointed. I am amazed myself - every time I take my boat sailing - how responsive and fast C'est la Vie is. Conditions that trouble other boats is fun sailing with the CA42. Think of the boat as a diamond yet to be final polished - you will have a lot of fun adding and improving and sailing her.

After owning a Beneteau 321 for 10 years, my wife and I bought a used Cat 42 last year (1992, 2-cabin pullman). We loved our Beneteau and we love our Catalina. We had virtually no problems with the Beneteau (purchased new) and the minor problems we have had with the Catalina relate to the boat's age, not with its design or construction.
Gene you are right, there is a lot of partial understanding about stablility. Although no expert myself, I do know that those that start out with a good number and then proceed to lash a ton of cruising gear on dec, like fuel cans, bycicles, barbies and what have you seriously degrade their stability. In fact anything above the waterline is a detriment. So with most of our storage down and low we're not in bad shape in that respect.

It seems that many Brits, and probably some Aussies as well, have their knickers in a bit of a twist over the ultimate stability of the C42. Apparently that is a big deal to some people, and the British sailing rags routinely report on stability. I believe there was a brief discussion earlier on this forum about that topic. The bottom line was that there were some questionable test results, and almost certainly some erroneous reporting.
...
