Hi everyone, we haven't been here for a while, and are now owners of a Catalina 470 but when we owned our 42, this forum had such good information that I
occasionally return to read and seek advice on things of similar concern. This is one of those cases.

I'm not so good at battery maintenance. So once again due to age (5 years), the previous owners undisclosed sins which include inattention to electrolyte

I recommend going with the golf cart batteries for the house bank. They are cheap and are available on every little island
in the world where they have no cars, just golf carts! Lugging 4D or 8D cells is not fun.
Trojans are a premium brand but I tried Costco's 4 years ago and they are working well. I would buy the Costco cells again when its time.

The 6V wet Costco golf cart batteries have worked for us. The three other boast we cruised with in Mexico have also been very happy with them. They are
around $70 each. Not all Costco's have them. We use 4 in one bank and 2 in the other bank. The engine battery is a 12V Optima (dry).

FWIW, I had Lifeline AGM batts on my Ericson 35 for 7 years with no problems and no maintainence and they still tested strong when I sold it.

When I got my C42 I was advised to put in golfcarts as I was going to be in Mexico and they could be replaced there easier than AGMs. But I was living on the
boat and checked levels regularly and monitored voltages on a daily basis and so had no problems with them either.

If I had to do it again, I would get the AGMs...

IMHO the Trojan T-105s are the way to go........if you fry them, you could replace them a couple of times before getting up to the price of an AGM. Trojans are
available from your local golf cart suppliers at way below marine prices.

Beware of charge voltage limitations of other types of batteries. Our friends were looking at a solar cell regulator that cost several hundred dollars (vs $50
for the one I use) because their batteries cannot be charged at normal voltages.
