Our Mk II looks like Corian but it is in fact fiberglass with a speckled gelcoat.

I did my catalina 30 too way back when. I was intimidated by the new materials although someone said they are easier to work with then wood/mica.Well, using high mac I am having the aft head and galley done by the masters at my boatyard.... will let the thread know how it turns out

Indeed, the countertops in new Catalinas have much more to do with the hull than they do the kitchen in your home. They are made by spraying material into a mold. The obvious place to check is feeling under the edge of the counter in the heads - the material wraps down across the front.

I replaced the countertops in my old C30 by buying a new piece of particle board prelaminated with formica. In that case, I was able to disassemble the galley far enough to get the old countertop...

John & Gilly on Destiny had their counters and surfaces on their C-42 replaced with LG Hi-Macs Acrylic Solid Surface counter material. As I recall the contractor/installer had nightmares about the install aboard a boat and raised his labor rate after installing the new surfaces aboard Destiny. Rod's quote probably reflected that new found attitude toward installations aboard boats:-) BTW, the surfaces aboard the MkIIs...

Corian is really an acrylic product.Formica is actually a much stronger material with less of a chance for breakage.Corian is a forgiving surface that can be serviced most of the time by fine sanding for simple scratches.It is soft and vulnerable to chips&breaks.I know the MK11 hasCorian counters and look great.I would personally not upgrade to Corian because of the cost (very expensive)and it's strength factor.Cheers,Steve Leshner

I'm not sure John and Gillian Foy are reading the posts on here now -- they're cruising their boat, Destiny, hull #329, in Mexico -- though they may read this and be able to give you an answer. I know they had this work done on their boat about a year or so ago.

I don't know what the cost was for them, but we got a quote from the same finish carpenter who did their job and as I remember he wanted somewhere in the $5000.00 neighborhood to do the work. This was...

Anybody replace their formica with corian or similar product... what was the cost and any details would be great....
