Perhaps some of the waxes may attract and show the soot more than others but I think (other than injector and engine problems) the soot or no soot is a factor
of fuel freshness. When I first took my boat out I noticed it was smoking a little and there was some soot built up - The boat had not been refueled for two
years - after I filled the tank with fresh diesel the "sooting " disappeared. I just motored for 4 hrs and there is no soot on the stern at all.

What brand wax did they put on your boat in Annapolis? I would like to try it and see if it lessens the soot on my transom.

Catalina told me that they ship the 42 to Australia with the exhaust on the port side. Thruhull in the center of the waterline and 15in. from the transom. I
installed mine 18in from the inside of the transom and the thruhull flange at the edge of the water in order to get the hose under the locker floor. I also
had to use a 45deg. elbow(Centek). The engine sounds a lot quieter(no water splashing) Next trip out I will let you know the results.

Hi Pierre,
I was just reading all the 'stuff' and thought I would add my two cents. I had a similar problem on my 1983 C30. I know it has a much different
exhaust port (directly on the bottom of the transome) but after about 10 hours of motoring, the transome would be 'sooty'. What I found was the wax I
was using seemed to grab everything it could (soot, black streaks, etc.) I like the 'Colinite Fleetwax' because of it's cleaning and polishing...

Ken,

You probably have the "new" Yanmar, the slow turning model. Before I signed the papers I called Catalina to ask when they were introducing the new
model and they said "no plan at this time". They delivered the new engine right after mine!!

Hi Pierre

I've noticed on the C42's around the club that there is a bit of soot on the transoms, but it isn't very pronounced. On TPO, I will get a cast that
looks like a bath tub ring if I motor for an extended period of time. Fresh fuel and clean filters seems to go a long way to...

I too am curious about the reason for your black transom. My boat is only 7 hulls from yours and I do not have the problem you do. I have the stock prop
and cruise at 1800-2500 RPM. Has your tach been calibrated?

This has been a problem from day one. I had the engine checked by Yanmar and declared ok. I now have 1000+ on this engine.
This is exhaust that I can smell but not see. I also had 3 different props on this boat ,the fixed p., Autoprop and Maxi-prop.
I also tried different additives. Some gave minor improvements.

Pierre:
FWIW on my 1994 50 HP I only got a VERY FAINT exhaust stain on the entire transom/swimstep area after many hours of motoring, e.g., 50+. I always thought this
came from exhaust swirling around in that cavity for long periods, exhaust which I could smell but not see. This is based on putting nearly 700 hours on the
engine during more than two years of cruising.
I agree with Jon that I would first look at oil consumption, prop size, injectors, RPM usage, etc before...

what are you getting on the transom? oil or diesel from the exhaust? I would be suspicious that maybe something greater should be checked. The injectors or
injector pump can cause unburnt fuel to pass with exhaust causing a film. are you using excessive amounts of oil. Just a thought. I would think
relocating is a big expense.
