Just in case someone is listening, we have a little (immediate) problem. I just got a call from my wife who is out on our boat with a group of friends.
Unfortunately, she can not get the engine to stop. (Pressing the button just doesn't do it.) Not having any of the books with me, I don't know how it
is wired. Is there more to it than just shorting the wires running to the instrument cluster?

The alternator will be fine. The only way to fry it is to disconnect the batteries when the engine is running. That will usually kill the diodes. Our second
alternator with the external regulator is has the power to the regulator wired through a switch so it can be cut out if wanted. I don't usually bring it
on until the engine has warmed up a bit to keep from lugging it down. It will almost kill the engine at low throttle when cold. This was set up after
checking with the regulator...

Mystery solved! It turns out if you turn off the key, the stop button no longer works. What must have happened is that someone bumped the key (which is a
little funky on our boat anyway), and turned it off. In the process of trying various options my wife never stumbled on the one with the key on until she got
back to the dock. There she pushed the button and it stopped as it should.

Sometimes it is the simplest answers that mess you up. (Key on, you can stop the engine - Key...

Buy now you must have gotten the engine to shut down. If not take off the air cleaner and choke off the air with a book or similar, there is a lot of suction so
don't use anything that may get sucked in.
The stop button actuates a small solonoid that shuts off the fuel, the there is a small nut on the solonoid arm that closes the fuel, look down in the pan
under the engine on the port side chances are that you will find the nut has backed off and is laying in the pan. suggest that you...

First thing that comes to mind is to shut off the fuel supply or starve it of air by blocking the air intake. There is also a manual shut off on the engine
toward the back on it's starboard side as I recall. Then have the dealer fix it.
