I keep *** 4 *** reefing lines rigged back to the cockpit. (Yes, it took some extra hardware.)

I detest the so-called "single-line reefing", and I always split the reefing lines into separate tack and clew lines. I have all of the lines run up to the boom, but I do not keep the second reef lines attached to the sail unless I expect the possibility of needing a second reef.

Cathy,

I keep the first reef rigged. Not too hard to rerig for the second reef if it's needed (or drop the main and tie in the second reef). Between the first reef and reefing the genoa, we're pretty comfortable up to 25-27 knots true wind.

Unusual to see much more than that on the Chesapeake.

I do carry a "bulletproof" working jib for the "got to get home and it's blowing 30+...

Like others, we have both reef lines running back to cockpit. I have modified it extensively by putting blocks on the reefing cringles and blocks on the mast.
Since I've been sailing offshore, I added 3 reef points. Only 2 are rigged with lines back to the cockpit at any time, usually 2nd and 3rd. The 1st reef does not depower a whole lot and seems more for fine tuning. 3rd reef is essential in heavy winds. My motto: reef early and often.

Cathy,
I initially rigged the sail with two reefs led back to the cockpit and lived with that for a year or so but decided to remove the 2nd reef for a variety of reasons. For one, the weather here in So. Cal. is pretty benign and for the most part I can pick and choose when and in what conditions I want to go out in. A 2nd reef may be needed .005% of the time. Secondly, even with a single line, there was an enormous amount of friction involved in putting in the 2nd reef that...
