It appears to open immediately. Our boat will start moving with the engine at idle speed. As far as reverse performance I don't why it backs down so well, but it's probably due to the shape of the blades. I won't try to described them here, but they are shaped differently than the fixed ones. Like a fixed blade it's a good idea to put the transmission in reverse when sailing. Even closed it will turn if left in neutral.

The Flex-O-Fold does use centrifigual force to open, but unlike your friends folding prop I feel that there is almost immediate reverse thrust with the Flex-O-Fold. On my previous boat, a Catalina 38, I had a Martec 2-blade folding prop. That propeller offered almost no reverse thrust until you had the engine really spinning. On my 42 it is totally different, as soon as reverse is engaged there is thrust. I feel this is most likely due to the blades being geared together and also because...

We have a 3-blade Martec Autostream on our boat and it's working well. I've read a few posts about the Flex-O-Fold that have all been positive, especially when talking about performance in reverse. My experience with folding props is limited to a friend with an Islander 36. His folder (not a F-O-F) has almost no performance in reverse and depends on centrifugal force to open. From a standing start in reverse the performance is pretty poor. If you try to use if for braking, forget about...

Almost no prop walk in reverse, increased motoring speed, no vibrations, and sailing performance unmatched by the fixed prop. The only issues I have had are replacing the cone zinc, mostly due to stray currents in our harbor. Another issue was when new the prop refused to close, this was due to inproper machining of the gears on the blades, Flex-O-Fold took...

I installed an 18" Maxiprop from PYI on my 1994 Mk I two years ago, & couldn't be happier. It is really a quality piece of equipment. Power is a Yanmar 4JH2E. Great response and no prop walk in reverse, with an increase of 1 knot in sailing speed at lower wind velocities. After the first year, I had to increase the pitch by one setting, theoretically because we are in fresh water rather than salt.

I guess I'm just a closet trawler sailor. In 3 months cruising BC I only raised the sails twice. My last trip to Catalina with no wind it was great to throttle up and feel the boat "surge" to 8 kts. I'd gladly sacrifice a little drag under sail for some blade twist and better motoring efficiency. The Autoprop sounds great and a few people I know who have one love it. We put the 18" Autostream on our 1990 boat about 3 years ago after running the stock fixed prop for about 2 years. My expereince with boats speed was about the same as yours. I had set the prop according to Autostream's commendations of 19° forward and 14° reverse but the engine wrapped up to full speed and didn't seem to be putting much power into the prop. I spent a couple of hours in scuba gear one afternoon and did a trial and error...

I recently removed my 18" Autostream to replace the cutless bearing and installed the original (unused) fixed blade. For about the same full throttle RPM, I get 3/4-1 kt higher boat speed with the fixed, suggesting the Autostream is less efficient. I'm told all feathering props are less efficient than a good fixed blade due to simpler blade design but I did not expect that much difference.
