(I have another forum question 'Buying '89 3 cabin' already posted.) New development: We took contracted boat to survey last week & found some blisters - gel coat & laminate. Surveyor recommends (if we buy) to have peel & new bottom repair, before they get worse in our warmer water - Annapolis vs. Oriental, N.C. Boat checked out excellent otherwise - just usual 'older boat' issues - none serious. Any experience with blisters? Is this typical? What repairs have been done on...

I have a 1990, had the paint blasted off, no blisters, the gel on the hull below the waterline was a slightly different color than above. My local dealer told me Catalina used vynal ester resin on the 42's below the waterline which is apparently better than polyester for blister prevention.

I agree with what Gerry (owner of Ragtime) suggests. I looked at many older boats (1977-1988 models) before I purchased this Catalina 42. All the older boats had hull blisters or wet decks. The wet decks cost more than the boats were worth to repair. The hulls on the other hand are repairable. I had a contract on a 1977 Islander Freeport that had blister issues. I contacted Craig Bumgarner at Zanhiser's Yachting Center in Solomon's, MD to get an estimate to fixe the hull. The decks...

after three boats and over 30 years of in the water everyday in so. fla. all my boats have had blisters at one time. usually not to bad. Every now and then a dozen, once over 100, and twice I hauled out without any ( the first five years of the new 42 the other boats were used ) unless there are lots of fist size or bigger blisters, no problem.

Some blisters? if there is not a large number of blisters, they could very easily be ground out, dried, patched and repaired. The size of the bllisters is also of import.

If the surveyor failed to specifically identify the extent of the blistering and referred to it as some bllistering, his reccommednation for strip/peel is without true merit. Were any of the "blisters" opened to check and inspect or were they pock marks? Was there a moisture...

I have 1989 Hull #108. It has spent most of its life in the Chesapeake, although a few years were in Florida. There are no blisters on this boat. It is possible that the original owner had a barrier coat applied before it was first launched, but I cannot be sure.

Previously, I had a 1977 Gulfstar 43. It had a serious blister problem and I had it peeled and sanded by Osprey Laminates in Herrington Harbour. I dried the...
