I believe 502 was the first fin keel boat to get the new design rudder, but Garry Willis would have to confirm that.
If you're talking about the old rudder with a stronger rudder post, I don't know. I read in the old forum it occurred in June of 1992 but I can't confirm that nor do I know what hull number is associated with the change.

Scott,
The rudder is in my garage, it is off of hull #224, my understanding is that in those days the same rudder was used for both wing and fin keel. Rudder has several gelcoat blisters but were considered cosmetic by surveyor, shaft it straight, no groundings, I sailed with it for a season after I purchased the boat, no issues. Suggest you email me I would be happy to assist you in any way I can, email ; a1sailor@hotmail.com

Hi Ron,
Is your rudder still for sale?
I hit submerged object and my rudder shaft is now bent I might need a replacement.
You mentioned that you have a fin keel but the rudder would fit a wing keel is that correct?
I own a 1992 Wing keel #333, Miami FL.
How old and in what condition is the old rudder?

Regards,

The new rudder is in.....phew!

Dug a hole almost three feet under the rudder and lowered it using a large ratchet strap....(see your local farm or trucking supply).

It was time. There were now multiple holes in the side of the old rudder weeping rusty water, and when I put the old and the new together I could see how bent the shaft really was....<img...

I replaced my rudder on a 1990 fin with the new style deeper version. The fit to the hull was fine in my case. I did not have any of the problems mentioned by MJK. I orderd the rudder from the local dealer and they had it shipped in from the factory with a new boat to their location. I replaced the rudder myself. I did have to dig a 3' hole to get the new one low enought to get the post into the hull. The boat's handling and tracking to weather is improved and weather helm is reduced with the...

Steve:
Refer to my recent comments to Mal re: "axial play in rudder" regarding the corrosion of the rudder post. I went thru the same problem on my hull #94.

I now have a new rudder that does not fit properly and will be replaced again on Catalina's nickel. Problem was that the rudder was cast at the wrong angle of blade to post. The result was that the blade would not go up high enough to allow the top of the post...
