Actually, the way I understand it, there are two schools of thought.

1: Kill everything. Formaldehyde I believe is the active ingredient. Sterilize the holding tank. Flush with fresh water.

2: Create a HEALTHY, but active holding tank. Add enzymes. (the green stuff) Don't flush bleach. Let the organic process do it's thing, make sure oxygen can get to it. Bay water helps. Solids break down very quickly.
therefore we have always flushed with fresh water, nothing fancy , we just use the shower/ faucet into the head.

Be careful adding filter to vent line. If you happen to overfill tank, the filter will plug and the possibility of a blown hose or tank is real because there is no vent.
Steve 642-2f TESA

You can add a filter to the rear holding tank vent and this elimates the odor. Any of the marine supply stores carry these filters.

I had the same problem. I would add chemicals, but these took a few flushes and a little time to kick in. The initial use of the rear holding tank left a aweful smell in the cockpit. Adding a filter elimiated the odor and it was a relatively easy job as the vent line is accessible in the starboard lazarette.<div...

Yes, circumventing the holding tank will eliminate MOST of the gasses coming out of the vent. As you noted, it is worst when you flush, ie when effluent entering the tank displaces air which then goes out the vent.

The other solution is to relocate the vent. Being where it is, the air flowing around the hull when pointed into the wind, ie at anchor, vortexes back into the cockpit, taking the fumes with them. A location similar to the forward head, right under...

The problem is not so much in the forward head, but it is a serious problem for the rear head. When I leave the boat I flush all heads with fresh water - easy enough to do using the sink/shower spigots. Our boat heads drain into the holding tank first and then with the macerator pump into the ocean. There is no "Y" valve or straight flush. The odor eminates from the rear vent, which is in the stanchion. It is very bad - even though I have flushed the rear holding tank repeated with...

Flushing the head with fresh water gets the waste water out of the hose between the head and the holding tank. The odor Ken refers to is created by stagnant sea water in the INTAKE hose. The first few flushes bring this foul water, and the associated aroma, into the bowl, and thus the boat. He referred to plumbing a way to purge the sea water out of the INTAKE hose.

Peter's solution is a good one, and if I understand it correctly, the same as Ken had on the...

I have taken to flushing the heads with fresh water once we are through for the day as the foul smell mostly derives from stuff (bacteria, algae, etc.) in the sea water. For the aft head the procedure is easy as I use the sink facet to fill the bowl with fresh water and then flush. For the forward head I use the shower facet for the same thing, but this takes a little more effort.

Secondly, I installed a filter on the aft head vent line since this was the...

Hit power switch to bilge blower first thing....(it is on the engine panel).
Go get some more stuff out of the car.
Open main hatch, then some of the smaller hatches.
