Waxing your boat?

How often do you wax your boat? What is the best wax? Do you do anything else besides just wax (cleaners, other surface coatings)? Do you do it yourself or have it done for you? Do you wax the metal also? How long does it take? What tools do you use? If you have it done by someone else, how much do you pay to have your boat waxed? I am in Southern California and my boat stays in the water all year.

            Thanks,

I used a 3M soft wax after polishing with the 3M Finnessit on haulout. The wax went on smooth and in some website I previously posted was rated in the top 10. The new 'wax like' compounds are good too. The pros in the yard were using an automotive detailing paint sealer. They were saying most products get 6-9 months. As the previous writer was saying, if you keep up with it you will find it easier. If you let it go, I would polish first and then wax. Waxing only requires application...

We use a product called Nautical Ease on the hull and all shiny fiberglass surfaces. This product is manufactured by a company in Michigan. It is actually a polymer rather than a wax. I had used it on our 1979 C & C 40. & it worked so well that I continue to use in on our 42. Every spring, I apply 4 coats on our 1994 hull. (We bought the boat new.) The first coat applied in the first year is difficult, but after that, following years are a dream. Also, there is no problem...

I have the boat waxed once a year in So Cal, in winter or early spring. It's a big job and the guy who does it uses a very mild slurry and carnauba with orbital polisher. The "topsides" and stern need it more than the hull due to direct sun exposure. Cost is about $300 including the stainless. I polish the scuff marks on the hull from the disintegrating bumpers in my tight slip myself.
