Thanks, I hadn't visited the discussion in while or would have mailed earlier. Thanks for your contribuitions. 114.3 from the factory. This is a helpful reference. Doesn't but quite measure up to the 115 minimum that some offshore races seem to have. There was participation of a Catalina in the Transpac a few years back. I might like to inquire as to whether that skipper had any issues here. Any thoughts who/ how I might make...

Having spoken to windward Yachting (the UK Catalina distributor) they were most helpful in providing the correct figures for the Catalina 42. There is no doubt that the figures shown on the RYA site are incorrect and are a direct result of the incorrect publication in the Yachting monthly magazine.

The correct figures are as follows: -

Yes, upon David's initial response I did some digging with regard to the Yachting Monthly reports. I picked up a long discussion thread that suggests that the initial AVS was calculated using a GZ ? curve from the "manufacture" I assume Catalina, and it was the wrong curve. Upon presentation of the new one the AVS measured 114, better but still less than the 120. The thread included it seems the actual writer/publisher of the initial report

If I recall, there was an error in the RYA's reporting on the stability numbers for the C-42 MkI and MkII. There was a correction published in the Royal Yachting Monthly but the STIX data was never updated. I am searching for the correction. Perhaps Gerry Douglas might want to provide some input regarding what the AVS really is. Maybe Garry Willis knows what the numbers are.
Rodney Kidd, C-42 #567 Sashay, 2 Cabin Fin, Marina Village, Alameda, CA

The Yachting Monthly magazine in the UK did a test on the Catalina 42 in March last year. They reported in detail on its stability. My recollection was that its angle of vanishing stability was 115 degrees which is low. However the boat fared better on the Stix test which is used more widely here in Europe.
