I had to disconnect the forestay to haul out the boat last weekend. It wasn't easy to get much slack. Any thoughts on how to get more slack when I re-attach it? I did ease the backstay to the end of the turn buckle and I eased the topping lift, boom vang, and main sheet. I also connected the jib and spinnaker sheets to the anchor roller and tensioned them. None of this provided much slack. Do I need to ease the lower and upper shrouds as well?

Thanks for all the great info. We successfully reattached the forestay by using both forward halyards around the anchor roller as well as slackening the backstay to the very end and loosening all the shrouds. We then attached a block and tackle to the furler and had a man stand on the furler. With all this we were barely able to get the pin back in. Once we did, we adjusted all the turnbuckles to their original positions and replaced all the kotter pins. I just need to re-tape the pins and we...

I've successfully put slack on the forestay by using the halyards. I have both a jib and genoa halyard rigged on our boat. I attach the halyard to the forward cleats, one on each side and winch them in. Attaching the forestay is then quite easy.
Tino Lanza, Dancing Dolphin (#739/3 cabin pullman, Westlake Village, CA)

All,

The difference might be in what furler you're using. I have the old Hood SL that replaces the standard turnbuckle and adjusting forestay length is a complex operation. I ease backstay and shrouds to move the masthead forward enough to remove the clevis pin without changing the headstay length.

I understand the Shaffer unit fits over the standard turnbuckle and is a lot easier to adjust. In that case, I'd use the...

I found a system and it works great for me even when I am alone. I loosen the back stay all the way till it is just hanging on. I haven't had to loosen the shrouds in the past. I raise the roller drum until it exposes the top of the turnbuckle and attached a cinch knot at that point with about 8 ft of lead. I then take one of my spinnaker halyards and attach it to my bow pupit and tighten fairly tight. Then I take my second spinnaker halyard and make five or six wraps around the the...

Jim,

You'll need to ease the upper and intermediate shrouds as well. With our swept spreaders, they pull the mast aft. You've got the right idea in using the halyards to pull the masthead forward.

Whenever possible, I try to have the yard pull me stern first. Then all I have to do is disconnect the backstay.
