Dear C42 Owners,
Our C42, hull 463, is the 3-cabin version and the alu Isomat mast passes through the deck in the owner's cabin, right against the pillow of the pullman berth. So when asleep (or trying to) the skipper's ear is at only 4 inches close to the mast and with the slightest motion of the boat the mast becomes a terrible noisemaker.
I don't suspect the halyards running inside to be the cause of this noisance because we can tighten them on the winches and...

Hi Wilf & Katrien,

My C42( hull #837) is a 2 cabin centerline version so our bunk is too far from the mast which runs down inside the forward head to hear anything. BUT, when I was recently installing a new radar system, we found that the conduit carrying the wiring had not been secured at the masthead and was bunched up around the base. That could be your problem - a trip in the Bosun's chair could confirm that.

Good...

I have perfected my "night routine". I am very strict about performing my "Catalina De-Clanging Dance" topsides --- in each and every harbor we hit..... before settling in for the evening. My husband just watches and shakes his head. Oh to sleep through trains and thunder and babies crying !

We had the same problems, Several notes on this site responded to this same question. It was brought to my attention that the rake of the mast provides a mid point bend for the cable run to hit at the bend. Tension of the halyards doesn't make that much difference. I had them tight, I had them loose. Get use to it. However, the creeking that comes next...try this. I done several different things. First I put some WD-40 behind the mounting plate for the goose neck (Mast attach point) that...

all mast wireing on Common Sense was done prior to steping the mast, dealer must have gotton all wires in the conduit as a result virtualty silent.
However this was not the case on our C34 tensioning the haylhards only made it worse so I tried loosining them , try slacking off on the tension, it may be that you have to find the "sweet" spot , in our case the tensioned lines were acting like a guitar string.
Wilf,

You'll never completely silence the mast. What you can do is identify and minimize as many sources as you can.

The wiring you've identified is normally routed through PVC conduits when the mast is rigged prior to commissioning. It's difficult to run wiring through the conduit after the mast is stepped so there's always the chance you have a few wires loose in the mast. As Mark points out, halyards are often the...

hmmm.... the C42 noisy mast situation. If I had a penny for every time this comes up on the net! When I bought my 42 I also was surprised at how loud the mast was! Every time I meet a C42 owner they have the same problem.

I can't speak for your boat, but for me (hulll #519) it turned out to the halyards and not the wires as they are in conduit in the mast. No matter how much tension I applied to the halyards the prebend in the mast meant that the jib...
