Hi Group,

Can someone give me a quick education on antifreeze ? what is the diff between the orange and the green. My understanding is that Yanmar doesn't suggest the green anymore. I just learned about this and am changing it but wonder how often anyone changes theirs and "why"

I have a boat in the north east.

There are lots of tales and myths about antifreeze, not only for small diesels in boats but also for engines in cars and trucks. The push for Dex-Cool seems to have originated from Mack Boring, not Yanmar, but it certainly won't hurt.

The original reason for the creation of Dex-Cool, which is a joint development of GM and Texaco, was to provide long life service in GM diesels used in cars. The basic antifreeze component is exactly the same ethylene glycol used...

run engine so thermostat opens, turn off and drain into gallon jugs to dispose of properly. let engine cool. If you are going to flush fill with treatment -water run engine fo 20 minutes ,repeat process of drain ,cool and fill with new mixture and you are good for a year or two. I have not flushed my system in 11 years and over 1850 hrs on aux. But I monitor the engine closely and replace coolant every year. Those additives really work but lose their pep after a year.

I've been topping up as needed, and this thread has reminded me that it's probably time to drain out the old fluid. Does anyone have some tips on the right way to drain the old antifreeze mixture out?

And -- you don't mix the water and antifreeze... I always did, but makes sense not to as distilled is good to have on board for my batteries --- and how does one get a easy half full can of antifreeze anyway,

I do not premix but keep a gallon of antifreeze and have distilled water as well as r.o. water. I also change antifreeze yearly rather than wait 2 years for the additives in the antifreeze is what keeps things inside the engine clean. also the heat exchanger probably is more critical for the antifreeze with its additives to protect. PS what was your rpm problem, the fuel filter?????

Just read an article on anti freeze ( boat u.s. May 2006). when switching from green to orange, a good flush is recommended as the two do not mix and the protection is diminished. Green is usually ethylene glycol and orange propylene glycol. Use distilled or de ionized water.

Yanmar recommends Texaco Dexcool (orange and none corrosive) and depending on your usage, changing it every 2 years is recommended. To my knowledge, they have always recommended the stuff.
