With hull number 76 I'm near the head of the pack...towards "classic plastic" classification.......

Lady Kay has developed a pretty good list of gelcoat cracks. The ones that concern me most are in the "creases" around the cockpit. Most noticeably where the coaming meets the cabin....all the way from deck to the "back rest", both sides. Around the back end of the coaming. In the floor in the forward head, also in the...

I am in the middle of a complete refit and I am wondering whether to fit the new rudder. From what I read here, the new rudder reduces weather helm. Is that the case or does it simply make it easier to control weather helm? In other words is weather helm independent of the rudder? Will the boat go faster with the new rudder? I am completely satisfied with the existing one but I have read that the boat is transformed with the new rudder etc etc. The experience of others would be welcomed.

There is a square-headed bolt and a Phillips head screw sticking out of the brass fitting that attaches to the shaft log hose. This is the fitting that is treaded for the stuffing box and lock nut. The square-headed bolt looks like it might be a plug into which one could screw a large zerk fitting, for grease. Is there some sort of bearing at the inboard end of the shaft log hose that needs grease? What is this bolt and what is the screw beside it?

(I have another forum question 'Buying '89 3 cabin' already posted.) New development: We took contracted boat to survey last week & found some blisters - gel coat & laminate. Surveyor recommends (if we buy) to have peel & new bottom repair, before they get worse in our warmer water - Annapolis vs. Oriental, N.C. Boat checked out excellent otherwise - just usual 'older boat' issues - none serious. Any experience with blisters? Is this typical? What repairs have been done on...

Last night our Catalina fleet had a presentation on this new (at least new to me) brand of feathering prop. It's quite a different design of props, blades made out of Zytel (fibreglass reinforced plastic). Makes it much lighter than Martec or other traditional props. Quite inexpensive, somewhere close to 1/3 the cost of an Autostream. Worth reading more about the product if you're in the market for a feathering prop.
